    Fishing superstitions

Anybody got any or go through any superstitions on the stream/pond?

Ex. Like leaving the camera purposely home so you`ll catch some really nice trout. I think I`ll start doing this one soon.
"Get your mind off trout,if you can.I know they`ve got you.I can see it. Every fraternity of sufferers knows its brothers.Trout hook men;men don`t hook trout.Better try and throw the hook while you can.By the time you`re a grown man there probably won`t be a pure trout healthy enough to fiddle with"... I leave the camera and net home and still get skunked.

I think you`re on to something here. You very rarely get skunked. So,you definitely could have a net problem.Anybody else out there have strange rituals or habits before or while on their waters?

I try to wear the same old fishing cap.

Try hitting the water at the peak "soluner" suggested times???

I have found this to be "eeriely" accurate on ponds and lakes more so than on streams and extreamly accurate during stable weather patterns???

              Food for thought!!!

Ever notice that the people who are late
are often much jollier than the people who have to wait for them?

I seem to listen to the same CD on my way to the fishing hole, but when I turn onto the last leg of the road trip (usually on some dirt road) I automatically turn off the music and roll down the window no matter how cold it is...I think this is more habit than ritual, but it certainly gets me "in the zone"....and I have to have my fishing hat...that is a must!

                  Nessmuk,
You may be on to something with the CD and favorite hat. WB hates my black hat, but it seems to work for me. Johnny Cash tune, "Man In Black".

When I was a kid, Dad and I had a pact that we would never mention the word "fishing" prior to actually going fishing. We were just "going to the water, with poles." We were convinced that the Gods listen to fishermen intently and wait for the utterance of the word itself. Once the Fishing Gods heard the key word, "fishing", they'd contact Mother Nature and she'd conjure up the biggest downpour she could. Years of experience has proven this as true as any fact can be proven.

Conversly, if already fishing and a rain shower happens along that looks like it may dampen the spirit of the outing, there is another ritual that can brighten the day. In this case simply say, with real emotion and conviction, "we're not catching anything, let's go home." Little else can bring the return of the Sun with more haste.

I've heard that a similar phenomenon also exists for those that derive enjoyment from washing their car. I don't, so I have no personal knowledge. Probably never will.

Never say the word "fishing" until you're already at the water... Trust me.

No superstitions here, in fact I'm trying to statistically validate the solunar tables in some form. As of right now, it's been the 'medium' recommended days that have been the best for me. 'poor' and 'best' are the worst. I need more data points though.

My friend used to play Son Volt's 'Drown' on the way to fishing on my truck cd player and felt that it was a jinx. He also used to think he was a jinx on me until we busted out the whooping stick last year.

Fish seem to get caught whenever someone in my group cracks a beer.
A man needs to believe in something. I believe I'll go hiking.

I wonder if the solunar fishing tables are fairly accurate. We used to go by them.Sometimes I`d pick my brother up and head up north and he would tell me what they said for that day. Can`t remember if we did good or bad w/his solunar info.
Now, we don`t mention the tables any more.We just mention what the weather is supposed to do.We seem to think the fishing should get better with an approaching storm system.(falling barometer)Is this true? What do you guys think?
I`ve had good days before storms, during storms and after storms.I do think that a bright sun shiny bluebird day is`nt the best.I have caught fish though but not as many.I still like a dark dreary, kind of misty and foggy day .Seems the trout are more likely to cruise around more with their guard down.

Any thoughts, experiences and ideas are welcome.

Almost forgot... I step over the foul line like in baseball. Very bad luck if you step on the fly line. Occasionally I'll spit too. A little spit on your fly never hurts. A tip of the cap -yes, been known to do that. I think CW is on to something - but I don't get out enough to think too much anymore like he does. Just happy to get out. Never can catch enough fish - but don't worry if I don't.
WB, you always were a foggy person - I mean like foggy days at least.
