No amount of pre-trip ritual was going to prevent getting soaked to the bone today. I went, I saw, I froze... AND I caught my very first trout on a fly!!! Shhhhhwwwiiiiinnng.

Felt a wee bit warmer after catching that first fish. Lost another "something big" fish. Ne'er saw it, but she weren't no minnow.

No net, no camera... I was pre-destined to catch one.

i dont really have any rituals or anything for fishing, but my uncle has a little saying. He claims that "if the cows are sittin, theres no use fishin". Apparently if the cows alongside the road are sitting/laying down in the pasture as opposed to standing, the fishing will be very unsuccesful. Im not sure if this is a widespread idea or just his, but it does seem to hold water for whatever reason

How bout cows chasing you? A few years back, my son and I were fishing a pretty Vermont stream that ran through a cow pasture. We caught a few small, but gorgeous native trout. Life couldn't be better. The cows that were in the distance must have thought we had food. As time went on they crept closer and closer. Then one, then two, then more started jaunting towards us. Not being of farm heritage, we were not exactly sure what they were up to. SO we started walking away from them. Maybe our imagination, but they seemed to pick up speed. Normally we aren't afraid of animals, but a cow mind you, especially a herd, are quite a bit larger than us humans, so we picked up our pace and high tailed it out of there. Bad luck, or was it good luck because we were catching trout initially?
