    Disaster (Almost)

My vacation started Friday, and I was all set to get out to a pond for the first time. I got home from work at 3, mountain man, and my cousin showed up, and we strapped my Hornbeck to my two-week old '05 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab. All of a sudden my neighbor comes flying down the road on a four-wheeler and smashes into the back of my new truck, shattering my Hornbeck in the process. The wood was completely destroyed, and there were a few buckle marks in the kevlar. The tailgate of my new truck got smashed, as did part of the bumper. It was around 2K in damage to the truck alone. The idiot had no registration for the ATV, and he didn't even have a driver's license or insurance. My first instinct was to slug him, but instead I called the police who promptly issued him four tickets.

I called my insurance company about the truck, and they're handling that, but what to do about my beloved boat? The boat I talked to all winter saying, "Soon, soon..." ? I called Hornbeck's immediately after the accident and they said to bring it out the following day. I brought it out on Saturday and was completely shocked (only because I know how busy they get) when they said they would have it read in an hour and a half! It was the best news I could possibly receive. The people at Hornbeck Boats are truly great. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude. I went out with a Lake Clear yesterday afternoon, to no avail, but I was out there, and that was that mattered. I will owe them an even bigger debt when I land a lunker, hopefully in a few days.

I hope everyone else had better luck than me when trying to get out for the first time. Hurrah for Hornbeck. -GG

Oh my God Gray Ghost.Thats the saddest story I`ve heard in awhile.Thank God you have good insurance and bought a canoe from a reputable person(the HornBecks)I`m glad to hear that your situation calmed down after that.Hope all is better soon.I probably would`ve snapped if it happened to me.Way ta,keep your cool.Things will work out. You`ll probably catch a 4lb. brookie this year.Good luck and have fun.You deserve it!!!.

Ditto, GG. I would definitely have shed a tear or two before or after losing control. Never did care for ATV's or Snowmobiles. A perfect example of why I don't. Glad you got out in the nice weather and glad Hornbeck is a great guy and took care of you.

Sorry to hear what happen to your Hornbeck and truck. Just reading your post made me gasp! I'm impressed with the service.
We had our kayaks out for the first time on Saturday. We were returning Saturday night with 1 kayak on my daughter's car and 1 kayak and and a canoe on our Jeep and we hit a deer. After the initial shock and anger wore off I tried to lighten things. Hey my kayak is OK. Not even splattered with blood and guts which is more than I can say for the Jeep. At least the Jeep is insured.
I would have been more upset if it had been damage from a 4 wheeler. At least the deer doesn't know any better.

As WB says, sounds like you've got some large trout coming your way as a form of compensation...

Hang in there. The fish are waiting patiently for your arrival.

HM, hope you're back on the road w/your kayaks soon.

Just please tell me that the four wheeler ended up as a pile of junk in your driveway!!

Hey, you got a crappy incident like this out of the way right at the beginning of the season man -- you've got a clean slate

...Man, good self control btw, I would've been so out of my gourd. And not to be blood thirsty, but... did they (the atv & rider) take any damage? I'd almost be satisfied to hear that (well... that the atv took a hard knock... the rider hopefully will take a hard knock from the law and not from the impact {might've knocked some sense into 'em though, hehe})

Man ,I cant` stop thinking about your bad luck. That episode can make a grown man either cry or go balistic.I think I`d do both.I just bought a new truck also and it almost feels like a new member of the family(sort of).I am trying to baby it for awhile. But, after hearing about that absurd bad luck, anything can happen at anytime I guess. You handled the situation very well.Like I said and some others,"the Fish Gods know who you are and you will be honored in return with a great year." Hope everything is smooth sailing for you after this.Good luck w/the flyrod and tightlines!!! <*)((((((((((<

                  Yes...

Someone was looking down on me that day! I landed a lunker yesterday! Check out my other thread, guys.

The ATV took virtually know damage, and the driver WILL NOT learn anything, unfortunately. Hawk, I wished it would have crumbled too. The best part is no one was hurt. One minute earlier my brother was in that exact spot, tieing the canoe to my truck. He was tying in under the bumper, so he was laying on the ground. One minute earlier and it would have been catastrophic. Gotta keep things in perspective. Thanks for the sympathy everyone.

Sounds like that was the disaster (almost) you actually meant with your post. You can lose a truck or a canoe, but you can't afford to lose your fishing buddy (brother).
                    Congrats on the fish again.
