    Impromptu Excursion w/Proto

Just got back from a very nice day w/the 'droid'.
I'll leave the details of the report to him; that's protocol.

...Especially since he landed his first trout(s) of the year today...!
I'm not sure who was happier...

Now you've got something to write about, Doug!
    Give us a full report.
Don't skip over any of the juicy details.

Feel free to leave out the location (just in case Daisy's administration of the blind-fold/deadly night-shade was less than adequate).

I'll post the pictures after they're developed...
Hint: the magic latin-word-of-the-day was *hydro-psyche*.
Close-up macro photos of 130+ caddisflies, underwater larva pictures, life cycles of hundreds of caddisflies, and fly fishing information for each hatch.

Sooo.... I was writing steve a PM to meet me a spot for fishing around sunset, meanwhile back at the ranch.... He saw my name on the active users list....

*Ring Ring* It's steve on the phone, he says he knows of a spot where the fish are takin', I can't complain, and it's sunday... There's no such thing as an excuse to not go fishing on a sunday.

30 minutes later... We're on the way to steve's hole, and he shows me that he's acquired one of those "brain erasing devices" like they used in the movie "men in black" -- it works too, I don't know where I was fishing

We stop at the first hole, gear up, and by the time we've geared up, there's a buncha people fishing the hole... As we walk up, one guy lands a brown on corn, I decide to go with a EHC (steve says "you got any caddis dries?", I say "....no....... oh crap! EHC, that's caddis" haha) and drop a yellow egg pattern off it (looks sorta like corn, figure it's worth a shot). He also lemme borrow a little bit of floatant -- I'm an idiot to not have any (I just haven't fished a lot with dries TBH), man is that much easier than false casting 45 times to dry off the dry. Steve is the next guy in the hole to land one.... you couldn't've guessed

I started to get some strikes and miss them, mostly on the egg pattern, one guy comes up for the EHC, and I miss him.... I'm starting to get into the groove at least. Then I start seeing the most unusual of rise forms...

Sounds like a g.d. plop and I can't see the fish that caused it. I see a couple more of them scattered across the water, then I see a couple right around where I'm casting.... Those ain't rise forms -- those are rocks being thrown in the water! Grrrrrrr, irked me so bad, some kid throwing rocks in the pool, put down the whole pool, but, I know it's not intented to be of any harm -- kids will be kids, and... Like I said, you gotta fish the conditions and if the condition is that there's a kid throwing rocks in the pool, that's the condition to fish.

Our decision on how to fish it? Rest it! We went upstream to see if we could find some wild / hold-over trout...

Really gorgeous spot, doesn't look like anything you'd usually find in NYS. Steve had seen a really monster fish out there a while back... He missed one strike, and I think I scared any fish I approached (you can almost see the ground moving the water with every step on the bank) -- to the point where I didn't see any..... back to pool A BTW -- Steve is no wuss when it comes to checking out the bugs, picked up a rock to find a sample of 4-5 cased caddis, and some mayfly nymph (I went on trout nut to see if I could figure out which one is it... but, damn they have enough mayfly nymphs to confuse the crap outta me).

Back at pool A, it's all ours. We're getting a couple mosquito bites (here come the bugs!), and there's a midge hatch heating up... The fish near the tail of the pool start rising in concert, it's a blast to see... They're not just sipping, they're jumping right out of the water -- this was enough to make my day without any fish.

Steve misses 6 strikes in 8 casts right off the bat. Then his "trout super computer" kicks in and he ties on the hydro psyche, bang! They take it with a vengence and he lands one. He shows me the hydro psyche and gives me one (thanks man! :headbang: ), I make a half dozen casts and steve calls over "hey, they like it on the move! give it action!", "they like it that way?", so I make one cast towards where I saw a riser, and give it a slow hand-twist retrieve --- boom! Little brownie slams the psyche, I don't even bother putting it on the reel, just drop my handful of line and strip it in, I'm so excited I'm pulling some weird stunts trying to bring him to hand -- surely steve will have an entertaining action shot Trout was in good condition, I put it back and gave it specific instructions to head up stream and get monsterous. Few minutes later I bring another to hand with the same method / fly, I hooked it a little nasty (hook point coming through right near the eye)... Was going to keep it, but, it took an action dive back into the water -- it wasn't the right time for that one.

Lemme tell ya, I'm relieved! It feels good to break through the barrier and make a catch!!

Meanwhile, steve has missed another 24 strikes (pretty much literally), he solves the puzzle with ease and brings more to hand (I lost count of how many he caught, a good bunch though). It gets dark enough and we decide to have a celebratory brew... Ok a few brews and I hadn't eaten since breakfast Had fun, and sero's not only a good fisherman for fish... he's a damn good fisherman for a free brew, and sweet talked the bartender into a complimentary cold one! That's one catch he didn't release

Nice story guys. Glad you caught a couple Proto. Sero probably will get you into something big one of these times out.

it doesn't take much to excite me

...btw, update... that wasn't a couple mosquito bites, it's like 8 of them, all on my hands... or maybe it's just the deadly nightshade kicking in....

i like your thinking (and lumberzac expressed the same sentiment in another thread), i'm usually one to complain about the bites, but.... in all honesty, i'm glad to have them, without those bug bites -- i may have gone fishless again

Daisy doesn't seem to care whether they're big or small. Seems they all smell the same to her, or do they?

It's funny... i noticed her getting bored w/the big ones.
These little ones are of new interest. But once she smells them, 'oh... same ole trout'.

By the look on Doug's face, he doesn't seem to care if they're big or small.

Oh boy! I've got one for you!
Just this minute, i received an email of a picture taken last month by a very kind innocent by-stander.
Give me a couple minutes to size it...

A crimson brown. Looks like he took your favorite fly. Did you use the dead drift - lift -joy technique? He almost doesn't look real his colors are so awesome. Born to wander cold waters. I like that a lot. Double meaning..... Trout....... Sero
