i think the toughest fishing there is, is when the water temp's between 38-40* (turn over.) i think you're much better off going somewhere else.

Thats when a springhole comes in handy and if I cant find one,Ill fish the shallows on the sunny side of a pond ,and if its on the downwind side of the pond all the better. Hugh

        Ice Out Fishing

Last year the ice was out in the SW Adirondacks by mid April...it will be interesting to see how this winter effects the ice out date. I have always had great success with using streamers that are red and white in color for Lake Trout....I catch most my ice out lakers in the last weekend in April. Sometimes I use a float tube but if you know of a "hot spot" in a lake, like a spring hole you can fish it from shore or wade in a bit and cast. When you hit it right you'll never forget it!

Red and White I LL have to remember that, last year after 30 yrs of flyfishing I finally caught a Laker totally flyfishing,he wasnt very big as far as Lakers go only 22 inches but he was the most satisfying fish I ever caught, dont get me wrong Ive caught plenty of them trolling all sorts of stuff, but never flycasting. Lakers, colors and line choice

22"....that is very respectable, especially on a fly rod! I use to (and sometimes still do) fish for lakers during ice out with an ultra light spinning rod with a red and white daredevil....they love the daredevil.....its not just for pike! But as I started fly fishing for them I started tying patterns with the same red and white combination with some great results! Color is key...BUT what is more important is using the right kind of line. I use Cortlands clear camo intermediate and switch to a Type II if I want to go deep. I find a wet tip line is probably the worse selection because it causes too much surface disturbance. I can't wait till ice out!!!

Got a wicked hit trolling a tandem streamer canoeing with my wife on 13th Lake one time. Wasn't expecting it, so of course I missed the fish. As Wildbrookies says, you never know what combination will work so it never hurts to try anything, anywhere.
