The ADK book is useful, but dated (1994). You might ask some of your questions of the ranger. But I think the best source of info are people who have hiked it recently, and these you will find on the various forums. Here are some sites that might be of interest to you:
I'm not sure about the mileage comparison with other trails, except to say that there is comparatively little elevation gain on the NP compared to these others, so mileage could be greater (of course, there could be other obstacles!).
both are relatively close to the trailhead ... you'll have to ask about being dog-friendly!
There are a couple places in Northville too, but I think they're more expensive and may not provide you with a ride to the trailhead.
Happy trails!

The Flip Inn in Northville (just off Route 30- by the Sport Island Pub ) is very basic and pretty reasonable ($53/night). Not sure how you'd get to the trailhead but you could call and ask if they'd give you a ride. Check out www.flipenterprises.com for more info.
The ADK guide has been revised and *was* due out this year but was delayed in order to incorporate the impending changes in route between Wakely Dam and Lake Durant. There was little point in issuing a guide that would be almost immediately obsolete.

So how much longer before "impending" becomes reality? Could it be a long time? Several years? Is the route drawn on a map yet? Flagged on the ground?
