    Mt Adams Difficulty

Hi Everyone... It's been a while since there's been a firetower post. Hopefully this gets some views.

I'm hoping to hike Mt Adams at the end of the month on my 50th bday. I just had gallbladder removal surgery last week, so I'm hoping I should be okay by then. Given I might not be 100% I just want to gauge the difficulty before I start (I'm hoping to be at least 90% ).

As a preview of what to expect, how would it compare to some of the other peaks I've done?

    Giant
    Snowy
    Blue
    Wakely
    Pillsbury
    Hurricane
    Ampersand

    Thanks!

I climbed it when it first became public again...It was nearly a bushwhack! Now, it's marked and maintained fairly well. Bridge over Lake Jimmy is long submerged, the go around is a bit longer.
I've climbed it a few times since, steep near the top, but generally pretty easy by ADK 46 standards. About on par with Pillsbury.
    Good luck with your recovery!

Thanks!!! Pillsbury difficulty is encouraging. If it were tougher than Giant, I'd be nervous.

Having been up there more than a few times I find it to be more like Snowy. While it is a fairly short hike the 1,000’ of elevation gain in the last half mile makes this a pretty strenuous hike.
"Climbing is about freedom. There's no prize money; there are no gold medals. The mountains are all about going there to do what you want to do. That's why I'll never tell anyone else how to climb. All I can say is, This is how I prefer to do it."

Ok. Its been a while since I did Snowy, but I do remember the last third or so feeling like it was straight up. My recovery is going well so I'm guessing I should be good. The intel is still very much appreciated though as some of our family members would not be happy on a Snowy level 1000ft elevation gain. They can hang back that day.

Hi everyone... As an update here, during our family trip we weren't able to get out for the "big" hike until yesterday (Saturday). No one wanted to leave the Wells cabin until 8am, and I got concerned about parking in the Upper Works area that late on a summer weekend so I changed the game plan to the Owls Head Firetower instead.

It might have been the right call as there were only two other cars at the trailhead. We had the summit to ourselves for the whole 30 minutes we were up there! Not bad for a Saturday.

The bottom stage on the firetower definitely needs some repair. Thankfully things seemed more solid higher up but it took my usual fear on those things up a notch.
