    Skiing conidtions? marcy?

So i plan on skiing the summit cone of marcy a few times tomorrow, do i need a beacon? or should the snowpack be consolidated enough to not need one?

The only other backcountry ski ive done is azure, a small mountain (800 vert) in nothern dacks, and tuckerman ravine

Are you going solo? A beacon wont do much good if nobody is with you who also has one.

You'd better do an avalanche risk assessment when you get there if you know how. And if you dont know how to do an avalanche assessment, you probably shouldnt be backcountry skiing.

best way to find out is to call the ranger, or ask at the loj.
He found himself wondering at times, especially in the autumn, about the wild lands, and strange visions of mountains that he had never seen came into his dreams.

well yea, i have a beacon, but i was asking basically as going alone or not, because obviously it wouldnt do me any good if im solo.

My thinking is that theres no snow to be windloaded due to thaw freeze of the alst few days, so no windloading?
maybe wright peak ski trail or sticking to the trail on marcy is a safer bet

No worries about avys. I skied around that area today, snow was all consolidated and corn. Have fun in the bowl on Marcy....conditions are great.

How good of a skiier do you have to be to get down Marcy? What's the safest, most direct route?

I've only climbed Marcy from either Panther Gorge and Slant Rock, so I guess I'm not too aware of terrain on the western side of the mountain.

well the summit is an open bowl, probably a black diamond slope at most resorts

and the rest of the mountain is pretty mellow sloped, but its narrow and windy

you have to be a decent skier, and the suggested way to ski it is using th evan hovenberg trail, you can ski all the way down to marcy dam from the summit
