If I were you, I'd head over to route 458 and check out the Santa Clara tract. There are old roads and trails everywhere. I've always wanted to check that area out in winter. There are alot of marshy areas that would be great to explore when frozen.

Yeah, how is the canoeing over there?

Anyway, have you checked out the Hayes Brook truck trail down by Mountain Pond on Rte 30? That is supposed to be an easy 7.2 mile hike. I've been on the trail but only to the pond. That whole area is pretty nice and not nearly as busy as the Saint Regis Canoe Area or the high peaks.

I keep meaning to check that one out- thanks for the reminder.
Canoeing is pretty amazing- no whitewater if you're into that, but some of the most deliriously sinuous streams and rivers imaginable. - The East branch of the St Regis River ; Quebec Brook to Madawaska , & Hatch Brook to the Salmon ( a narrow, break-your-neck but deep run in high water) are great- The waters up there are narrow and you can spend an entire day cruising- I've been trying to get to the Deer River through Dickinson, but I think most of it's private property now. The area is generally quiet.
