I am reposting this from last year, with the only response to my query suggesting a canoe paddle. I am interested in a hike only, with my dog, and interested on the road condition for the approach to the trailhead. Also, assuming that the road is a paper company holding, is a day use permit required to do these hikes?

I did that hike two weeks ago. You don't need a permit. The road is in good shape until the last couple hundred yards. You will have to drive at least the beginning of the bad section in order to get off of paper company land and on to state land. It's doable in a sedan if you're careful. The trail is in good shape and both ponds are worth a visit.
