According to this, theres still enough snow to go skiing and haul a sled. Looks like skis, snow shoes and crampons are still usable. If you're thinking about going bareboot, ya might wanna check the current snow depth here. Looks like a foot is still up there, might be compressed enough on the trails to let you bareboot, but the open summits are gonna be tricky without crampons.
There may not be much snow up there above the treeline from the wind, but theres sure to be ice
- It's lonely at the top. But its comforting to look down upon everyone at the bottom
You need snowshoes, dont forget the rule of 8 inch of snow. We saw people and trace of people who did not put their snowshoes, they almost destroyed the path at some places.
Yesterday we did Big Slide from Garden Parking by the Phelps trail to John Brook Lodge and up to BS and down by The Brothers. The snow still deep but very soft. You need snowshoes but not crampons near the summit (for BS). The warm temperature melted the snow. I found that surface very hard to walked on it. Hard on the steep section when you go up and slippery when you go down.
Rangers usually won't let you continue on the trail if you're barebooting. And there's usually a ranger patroling that trail, so the odds of seeing one are pretty good.
