    The mines you saw are the Barton Garnet Mines. My parents took me for a tour over 50 years ago. I believe tours are still available.

    It's an open pit mine, like many other mines. It's just that this being the Adirondacks, you cannot see it from many places, due to our mix of public and private land, our "wrinkled" terrain and our thick forest.

    I’m sure somebody can answer this question. What is the rocky area to the west when looking from Moxham? Is it a mined area? Garnet mine?
