Phelps

most of us would place Phelps as an easy mountain to climb. The trail is short, not particularly steep and easy to follow.

This was mentioned in the Beginner FAQ thread and I didn't think it appropriate to post this reply there.

Didn't Phelps used to be one of the "trailless" mountains? This would be back at the time when Santanoni still had a trail. Anybody know around what time the trail for Phelps was established? And for that matter, when the trail for Santanoni was abandoned? I know the number of trailless peaks has stuck around 20 for most of the last century, but it seems to me that a handful of mountains have switched sides of the ledger in that time.
