    Times Square Maps

Please post/send in any maps that anyone may have concerning Times Square. I currently have 2 different ones. Although they are similar, there a enough subtle differences to make someone possibly back track . I am told there are several herd paths and it can be confusing . Thanks.

    The True Times Square

    Jeff,
Sorry no maps but this may be helpful.
There seems to bee a lot of confusion in the Times Square area mostly because someone, trying to be helpful I’m sure, carved initials into trees in an open area before Times Square. While the “P” for Panther is correct, the “C” and “S” add to the confusion. Let’s dub this spot Harold’s Square, in keeping with the NYC theme. Times Square is off to the left of Harold’s Square and is easily identified by the large rock on the Santanoni side of the clearing. It’s easy to see how this new clearing was developed; it’s the first flat spot you reach after climbing up Panther Brook. Many years ago it was used as a winter tent site and gradually grew in size. Unfortunately, because of its location and the mislabeled trees this opening is going to grow and the confusion is going to continue.
For the record, to get to Panther you turn right at Harold’s Square. For Santanoni, take the path to the left from Harold’s Square, once you reach Times Square there is a path around the backside of the lager rock. Couchsachraga’s path is a small opening just to the right of that large rock.

Tom's info is dead on, what I had when I got there, and what I didn't listen to when I met someone who convinced me otherwise. 45 minutes later, I smartened up, after reading Tim and Joel's notes.

When you get to "Harold's Square" you will be tired. Don't let that cloud your judgment: you've still got a long ways to go, so use that time wisely!

BTW, all of the herd paths to the Santanoni summits were in excellent shape when I was there last month: easy to follow, nice route location. A long, but very satisfying trip.
      ...15 down, 31 to go.

Joel Dobson has a hand-drawn map of Times Square here and it seems pretty accurate.

Shouldn't that be Herald Square? Also named after a newspaper (the one that used to be located there)?

When you get to Times Square, you may want to mark the path by which you entered. It's easy to get mixed up when you return and strike off too far west to hit the path back to Panther Brook.

Note that Times Square isn't a spot on the way up the mountain; it is the highest point that you can get to as you climb up Panther Brook (other than Panther Mtn.). It is a small clearing at the top of a high ridge. As you walk straight across, the Couch trail forks right at a cairn and descends. To the left of the cairn, the Santa trail steps up onto a small rise (a good view), then descends over a large boulder into the woods. As you enter Times Square, there is a herd path to your right that will take you to Panther in about 15 minutes. Since there are so many paths there, you may want to somehow mark the spot where you entered Times Square, to aid in your return to the brook.

Is this it? Two maps? Does everybody rely on the same map for Times Square? If there are others out there, if you want to draw one on your own recollection, OR if you want to make one while up there in Times Square, please post it here.

That's all you need really, it isn't THAT complicated, but without some type of guide it can be confusing. The new ADK High Peaks guide also has all the info in it about where the trails go and such.
