    camping near Johns Brook Lodge

This coming weekend, planning a trip in that area. We would like to "base camp" in the vicinity of the Johns Brook Lodge...not staying at the lodge itself. I see the lean-to (on the map) at the base of Lower Wolfjaw, and am wondering if there are other backpacking tent sites to choose from in that area? Knowing that the "weekend traffic" is likely to be high...

    Thanks!

There are a few tent sites near the Wolfjaws Leanto. There are several leantos on the trail to JBL from the garden. There is a fairly large designated campsite a little past JBL on the right (assuming you're heading toward Marcy from JBL). There are additional Leanto's and tent sites as you head further toward Marcy on the Phelps trail (Bushnell Falls, Slant Rock). There is also a Leanto on the Orebed Brook trail.

There are 3 leatos on the JBL property that ADK Mt Club rents out for $20/night. You can check with them to see if one is available to give you a "guaranteed" spot.

I've stayed at the campsite just past JBL a number of times. Its a good spot and close enough to JBL that you can take advatage of some of JBL's ammenities if you wish.

    Have a great trip!

      Emilyt:

I have the same thread in adkhighpeaks.com. as I'm planning on doing the same in the next few weeks. Similar answers there so far as to what you're getting here. I've been through the JBL area alot but never stayed there so I didn't pay a lot of attention to camping areas....there are three LTs on the way in from the garden but the farest one in just past the ranger station. There are LTs for rent at JBL (I don't know if there are 2 or 3) for rent for $20 plus $2.50 per person over 2 people (you get the LT excusively when you rent them). I am also told there is a camping area near the junction with the Slide Mountain trail. There are also LT's on WJ trail and the Orebed trail with camping areas near both and Bushnell Falls and Slant Rock. I have stayed at Slant Rock several time and have always found a tenting spot there (maybe not the best spot) but sometmes it gets pretty crowded there.andso I assume JBL is similar. Of course bring your bear canister (or rent one from JBL). Let me know how you make out....

Bushnell Falls lean-tos are nice, especially the second one. The "new" Slant Rock lean-to is supposed to be nice (haven't been there). Slant Rock itself, when we were last there, was pretty much a trash dump. There are camp sites just north of the JBL trail toward Big Slide.
