I'm an ADK noobie lookin for someone to hike with

    Hi guys,
My name is Steve Vindler and last summer my friend took me up to the adirondacks and I fell in love.
I climed Noonmark when I was up there and I'm addicted!!! My only problem is that I have no one to camp/hike with me up there. All my friends work etc.
I have all summer and I am looking to do some overnight packing. I wanna start my 46rs this summer and get a bunch done but i don't want to hike by myself...

I'm from the Philadelphia region and I was wondering if anyone would want to show me around.
    Tips/Ideas welcome. I'm a sponge but I need info.

    Thanks

    LOL, another one hooked.
This is as good a place as any to hook up with other hikers. Just post when you plan to go and where and you'll likely find others heading the same way. Views From The Top is another good source. Finally, see if there are any hiking clubs in your area - you'll probably want to carpool if you're coming from PA.

I'm gonna go search for climbing groups in the area.

PS. I'm not crazy, and i'm alot of fun, very intelligent and i don't bitch...

I think you need someone who is a member to recomend you or something like that. I'm not a member there so I can't help you out with that.

I just discovered that you have to get an existing member to email the admin (Darren) and maybe he'll create an account for you. [I've always had contentions with the way in which that forum has been (mis)managed... I'll just add that to my list]

Guess that leaves you http://www.thebackpacker.com/trips/ . Kinda cliquey from an outsider's perspective, but several of the members here go on their hikes and seem to like it. I met a few of the members a couple years ago on a long ADK hike and had a good time.

I usually post my planned hikes in the trip/events planning area of this forum. Most of them are on the weekends. You're going to be hard-pressed to find a steady set of hiking buddies for mid-week stuff.

Also look into joining your local adirondack mountain club chapter. http://www.adk.org/chapters/index.aspx

Hmmm that sounds good allthough the adirondack mountain club isn't really an option for me because i live in philadelphia.... i guess i was just born in the wrong state. Shoulda gone to SUNY Newpaltz like my uncle told me to... haha

Whoops, I should have looked closer . You can join any chapter and even join in some chapter organized events (like the hikes) even if you're not a member.

For example, the albany chapter of the adk club sponsors a bunch of hikes each week. The events list can be seen here:

The Pharoah Mt hike on May 23rd might be right up your alley . You'll need to email albhike@yahoo.com NOW to get the contact info for the hike's organizer so they know you're interested and can tell you when/where to meet.

I'm a fan of what the adk club does with their money. Not always a fan of how it's spent, but they're a great organization overall. I'm a member of 2 clubs, and they're the only 2 clubs I've ever joined in my entire life: 1 - the 46ers, and 2 - the adk club (albany chapter). Even if I don't take full advantage of the benefits being a member offers, the money is going toward a great cause.

Just food for thought. By no means does anyone really care whether you have spare money to give and this aint a sales pitch. ADK Forum is also not affiliated with the adk club in any way. [/disclaimer]

go to this page for links to all the chapters of the ADK ...

I noticed that there's a chapter in North Jersey, so maybe that's an option.

I belong to the Schenectady chapter, and they often have planned hikes mid-week, and to a number of different peaks/areas (including the Catskills). Their website is http://www.geocities.com/schdyadk/ and here's the link to their newsletter where they list their planned hikes and contact people http://www.geocities.com/schdyadk/newsletter.htm

join up ... you'll meet some pretty interesting people!

Steve, I live in Poughkeepsie, which is near New Paltz. I go up to the Adirondacks often, although having already done the 46, I'm focusing my attention more on the less traveled trails. PM me if you're interested in joining me on any adventures this summer.
