Either one should be relatively dry (very little snow this winter). Tongue mountain was completely snow free with 2 sections of minor ice a month ago.
Having climbed nearly all the peaks and hiked most of the trails around Lake George, I can't say which of many of the hikes I would pick over the other. I'm partial to Tongue because of the strenuous workout and rugged terrain. -
If by hiking the tongue you mean hiking the whole thing, that would be a significant hike requiring a full day. If you mean just a jaunt up to 5th peak or something like that, much easier. Black is quite easy, and the best views are not at the summit most of which is treed (there is a good shot north and northwest though, from the shack remains. Best views there are ledges one the way down the other side (assuming you climbed up the short way). Doing the entire loop makes a nice varied hike.

Thanks Dick. It'll be black*. It will be nice looking down from the mountain than up it.

thanks
