Trail Conditions, Cedar Lakes Area ?

Does anyone know what the trail conditions are around Cedar Lakes, any snow left on the trails ? Also, is Pearkins Clearing road open yet ?
Last time I was up that way ( last month) the gates were still locked, I thought the road was supposed to be open April 1st.

Thanks for the info. I had a hunch the gates would still be closed.

They don't open the gates until the road is fairly dry. I wouldn't think it will be too late this year, considering the winter we've had (or haven't had!).

Trail Conditions, Cedar Lakes Area ?

The last few years I've gone up there, the gates open around May 1st. As Redhawk mentioned, maybe this year it will be earlier. I just looked at this site: http://www.dec.state.ny.us/website/p...angers/r5.html, which listed Tom Eakin (518)548-4132 as the Ranger for that area. Elsewhere in those sites, it mentions some trail conditions, but I don't know how often that gets updated.

A friend of mine and myself backpacked to the Cedar Flow (Carry) lean-to 2 weeks ago - Cedar River Road is technically closed but we made it as far as where it turns into state land on both sides of the road - there is a parking area there with a huge cliff on your right.

We could have went further but I chickened out in my Corolla where the road was eroding near a drain pipe going across the road!

But you would have had no problem with a 4 wheel drive truck or a car that sits up higher to the ground -

could have made it all the way to the gate at the Cedar River Flow Interior Outpost.

Quite a bit of blowdown to go under / over / and around on the NLPT - and deep snow drifts up to the knees to tire you out real fast!
