    Planning Spring Break in ADK's

Hi, I'm new to these forums.

A buddy and I are trying to plan a camping trip to the Adirondacks. We've never been out that way before. Were planning for Spring Break this year. I just have a couple questions.

What would you suggest for the best areas to see. We're looking for camping and hiking, probably with some paddling during the trip. We'd have to rent a canoe or kayaks. We plan on bringing our mtn bikes too. We're not looking for real touristy areas, just nice wilderness.

The other thing is what is the weather usually look like in late March/early April.

    Thanks in advance.

Weather can still be wintry depending on how long winter holds on for. Hell, Albany, which is in the Hudson River VALLEY, has seen 12+" of snow in early April (happened a few years ago). Generally you'll be coming in during the thaw, which is great for whitewater rafting/kayaking but messy for everything else. Even hiking that time of the year I'm forced to go anywhere else but the mountains due to runoff and excessive mud conditions. I've also hiked mountains until this time if winter's holding on tight, so if some snowshoeing is in the cards you may get lucky in having a variety of activites. Unfortunately all of this depends on things beyond our control and only time will tell what sort of spring we're going to have.

Maybe the Catskills would be more suitable late March/early April for the activities you're interesting in. Being further south their thaw starts a little sooner.

Gotta second jhrudkaj's comments. Late March/early April will likely still be winter in the Adirondacks. Worst case you're looking at cold weather, snow, and most of the navigable waterways will be frozen (except for whitewater). Best case, it'll be wet and REALLY muddy. Might want to make this trip the week after finals, or the week before the fall semester starts.

Spring Break Memories in the ADK's

Reading of your future Spring Break plans really put a smile on my face! About 6 years ago for x-mas AdacKr and I got an Old Town canoe. We were so excited and could hardly wait! When spring break finally rolled around we packed up the car, strapped on the canoe and hit the road heading for Inlet, NY! Needless to say when we saw that all cars w/ canoes on top were heading SOUTH and not North we start questioning our intentions. When we arrived we saw that the lake was mostly covered in ice and so were the beaches. Nothing curbed our enthusiasm however! We paddled around the edge where the water was open and set up camp! The next day we charged our canoe through the ice which chewed at the edges of our beautiful new paddles. It was a great long weekend! I hope you also enjoy your Spring Break...but be prepared for everything that Mother Nature will surely throw your way!

i will be out there most of my break.i am planning to solo the great range trail but if you want to join me, send a PM.

i have only been out in the ADK about 3 times. the first time i brought a friend who had also never been there before, the last 2 times where solo. as long as you have a map and a compass and have the basic skills, you should be able to figure things out and have a great trip in no time at all. look at the map, pick a few points of intrest, and connect the dots. its that easy! thats why i love the ADK.
