    High Falls Loop

    Morning all!

    Has anyone been out on the HF Loop recently?

    Thinking of going the 11th of July.

    I've done the Jannacks Landing side a number of times to HighFalls but never the west side.

    Climbed Cat 4x and have never had a clear day!!
    I sometimes put a wool hat or mitt over my nose, across my face, but not to cover my nostrils, just to keep my nose warm. You have to pay the piper somewhere for this kind of fun

      Hmm..I typically avoid FB but lately it has some pretty good sites for timely info.

      Interesting that there are Covid concerns on the trail but the Town of Fine has sent a memo to all that if they are renting their cabins they have to advise that anyone coming in from out of Town must be prepared to have 2 weeks worth of food etc. if they need to quarantine. The Star Lake IGA closed last winter so yeah, if you're coming up ya better be prepared

        I was just in the area last week. Lots of people on the trail as of Friday and Saturday. I walked back in from Five Ponds thinking I could get a campsite closer to the car, but all sites were full as of Friday afternoon. And there were more people headed into the High Falls area as I walked into Wanakena. Be prepared to camp at an alternate spot.

          Wow!...

          Thanks Golden Dragon. I've done the east side a few times and have never seen another person save for a Ranger at High Falls one time.

          Might need to start on Thursday.

            Backcountry use patterns are completely out of whack this year, which makes it tough to accurately predict how much use specific areas will get. Some areas seem to be getting use levels well in excess of the norm, while others are getting far less use than typical.

            There's also been a substantial surge in inexperienced visitors venturing into the backcountry especially. So individual behavior patterns are different as well... and even less predictable.

            I will say that with regards to those entering the area on foot... there's not a whole lot of designated camping options for some pretty lengthy stretches of the loop, so if a site is taken, you may be forced to either camp primitively off in the woods in accordance with the 150 foot rule, or walk several miles to see if the next site is open.

                Look for increased weekly ranger SAR reports involving the ubiquitous "lower leg injury" and "not prepared for overnight or darkness".
