    Snow cover

How's the snow cover in the wilderness areas up in the dax? Since we've got this January thaw going on I was wondering. I wanted to take a 1-night trip to do some tromping and wanted some snow for a short hike (snow shoe/x-country ski). What are the conditions like?

I was wondering the same. We are planning on going up for a snowshow hike on Sunday or Monday but with the weather we are having in Albany I question how much they will have. We are looking at doing either Esther or Phelps.

    Thanks for any info!

Here's a site I've found helpful for Snow Depths, I know others whom rely upon it as well.

we really havent gotten any of the rain thats been happeneing down south. The rain that fell this morning pretty much turned to ice whenit hit the ground and the rain didint even last that long. It's supposed to get codl again up here for the weekend, they were saying snow on sat and back down into the 20s. Its in the 40's today, im gogin to take advantage of the weather and go out and do some x-c skiing!

            Snow cover in the daks

Greetings to all...I am a newby to the site. (long time lurker...first time posting!)

ADacKr (my hubby) and I were out skiing this weekend. We skied from Upper Works into Flowed lands on Saturday. Spots were it bit touchy (rocks w/ a some wet spots) but still a great, fun ski. Another foot of snow and it would be prime skiing conditions. ADacKr did a great job filling in some of the tough spots so we had a smoother/safer trip out.

On Sunday we skied from Piseco Lake to (almost) Hamilton Stream Lean-to on the NTP. Again, similar story. Pretty decent skiing, although another 6-12 inches would have made it a smoother ride.

This coming weekend is really up in the air for us. We had hoped to do some more skiing in the dak's and then to Lake Placid Saturday night for a concert (Grace Potter and the Nocturnals). It's clear now w/ the pending forecast that skiing will not be a possibility so we might slog up Street and Nye.

She is playing Saturday night at the Lake Placid Performing Arts Center. I'd rather see her in a smaller, more intimate venue...but we're excited none-the-less. I'm bummed to have missed the PBS show.

Looks like we might be able to ski after all this coming Saturday and Sunday. Hoping for a dumping of snow!!

I skiied the Chub Pond trail on Sunday and the Twin Lakes Trail on Saturday (both in the Black River Wild Forest) and there was plenty of snow for skiing. That being said I doubt there is enough left to ski there now, if the weather is as warm and rainy as people are saying, though I am in Virginia this week and can't verify.

Thanks for the Info. Think we will be up on Sunday. Still trying to figure out if we want to do Phelps or head over and do Esther.

Can't wait to break away for a day!

Yeah I'm tryin to figure out what I'll be hiking on sunday and monday, in gogin to head up Pharroh tomorrow. Also have to keep in mind that sunday is gogin to pretty bad weather snow wise. But I beleive when lots of snow is being dumped on ya it it shoudl be reffered to good weather instead of bad!

Yeah, I will have to keep an eye on the weather and how much snow is expected Sunday. Not sure I want to be traveling up in a storm. Have Monday off so we will see if that is the better of the two days.

Well its been snowing liek crazy out side for awhiel nwo and its not really suppsoed to stop till sunday afternoon. There is a winter weather watchf or the entire adirondacks. 6-10 inches were posted but 12 is likley in the northern parts. From what I see out my window teh snow which was lost is being put back down! Should make for some nice hiking on monday. I'm thinking of heading up Giant. Cant wait!
