Is there a lean-to for Allen?

I am seeing on the McMartin map that there is lean-to just off the Yellow trail on the way to Allen Mt. But, on the ADK map it does not show a lean-to...is that lean-to still there??

The lean-to you are referring to was the former Twin Brook Lean-to. It was removed in 1992 at the request of the land owner, Finch Pryun paper. Per current regulations it was also too close to the brook. Camping is not permitted until you reach state land on the bushwhack path to Allen.

Most folks camp when they cross skylight brook. I dayhiked it. If I did it again, I would camp, as it was a VERY long dayhike.

Hi Hillman, If you continue about a mile or so up the trail towards Hanging Spear Falls from where the big sign is there is a legal campsite on the riverside. No leanto, but it's a nice location.

I don't ever really plan on rehiking that mountain. That mountain was mean spirited. When I got back to my car, I started puking for no good reason whatsoever. I disliked that one so much, I still haven't developed the film, and it was last summer.

The trail can be a dehydrator, too!

"When I got back to my car, I started puking for no good reason"

            Hillman:

As someone who tends to sweat a lot during heavy exercise, (like brushing my teeth), I have found out too many times on long hikes that dehydration can lead to nausea and puking. That's a long hike and if you did it in the summer, it's possible that the reason you got sick is that you did not drink enough. What happens to me is that I don't drink enough, then I start to lose my appetite, don't eat, and finally I get sick. Often that is accompanied by muscle cramps, caused by the loss of electrolytes. There are other sypmtoms, too, but I won't go into them here. If this sounds familiar to anyone else, try here: http://health.discovery.com/diseases...pedia/591.html

Let's see - I need a season to hike with dry trails, no bugs, cool temperatures, low humidity, and long days. Wonder when that might be?

                  On the subject of hydration:

In the summer especially it is a good idea to start taking on fluids the day before you hike and to drink plenty of liquids during the hike. I also find that the sports drinks in powdered form are great! I just make up individual portions to drop into a quart Nalgene. Whenever I replenish my water supply I justr drop one in. The electrolytes in Gatorade and Powerade are the best things you can ingest while backpacking.

Avoid drinking much of anything with caffiene or alcohol becasue they will contribute to dehydration.
"If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it." Lyndon B. Johnson

I believe I puked from hyponatremia, which is ingesting too much water. It's the only time thats ever happened to me, and I remember learning about it in my wilderness first responder class. I definitely drank enough water that day. I just think my salt levels got a bit askew from the sweating and overhydrating.
