    Marcy Dam...

I want to take my 9 month old chocolate lab on a relatively short hike this weekend...I was thinking of just hiking into marcy dam and back out. It'll just be me and the dog so i'm not gonna be crazy and attempt any peaks.

My concern is snow depth...i have snowshoes and presume that the trail into the dam is packed. But what's the ettiquette as far as dogs are concerned?? He'll probably be sinking into the snow, No??

Any thoughts? or other possible hikes? I'll be coming from albany.

That area requires a leash for your dog.

Dog has to be on leash in Eastern High Peaks. Trail to Marcy Dam will be packed down and nice views from there, but I can't stand having my dogs on a leash.

Try N-P Trailhead off Averyville Rd (not in Eastern High Peaks) and a dog can run wild. No mountain views but a nice marsh to check out about 1.5 miles down on the right.

Mckenzie Mountain trailhead could also be a nice spot. This is on right about halfway to SLK.

Baker Mountain in Village of SLK. You'll have to ask direction since I don't know the name of the street that it is off of.

Ask at EMS too, they are helpfull.

It's not likely the dog is going to post hole if the trail is well broken. I've seen dogs on that exact same trail during the winter season. He's probably going to want to frolick in the fresh snow off the trail, so bringing him into the eastern high peaks on a leash is going to be torture. There's plenty of other places in the adirondacks other than that one spot that don't have leash laws.

Thanks for all the responses....he IS a puppy and not exactly mellow. He tends to get excited at the site of his own shadow. Maybe i'll try one of the other locations instead. Thanks again!
