    Trip Ideas?

Hey.....I am the Senior Patrol Leader of BSA Troop 292 in Rochester. I previously posted a crazy trip Idea in the High Peaks region which I now realize is near imposable. However, out troop would still like to do a Backpacking trip in the Adirondacks next summer. Does anyone have an idea for a 5-6 day trip in the adirondacks that is of moderate difficulty possibly encompassing a mountain with decent views. We have previously hiked in the Cranberry Lake Wild Forest and Five Ponds Wilderness area and are looking for something similar but possible more challenging

Any Input would be greatly appreciated.

The West Canada Lakes Wilderness Loop with a trip to the tower on Blueberry Mountain would be ideal.

I'd point you to the Cold River Area. I'd start at the blueberry pond trailhead and hike to Duck Hole then down the Cold River to Shattuck's and North to the trailhead again. You could take in a high peak in the Sewards, see some beautiful country, and visit Rondeau's hermitage. Nice loop, about 30 miles and very enjoyable spending 5 or 6 days at it.

Good suggestions from Redhawk and Wildernessphoto. I would particularly second the Cold River idea. If you do one of the Sewards, I'd recommend doing Seymour. Easier than the others, and IMO better views (from a point near the summit).

Alternative might be to hike the Northville-Placid Trail from the northern end (Averyville) to Wanika Falls to Duck Hole, SW through Preston Ponds to Henderson Lake, up through Indian Pass, over the Cold Brook Pass trail to Lake Colden, up to ADK Loj, with a number of peak choices between Colden and the Loj. Drawback of this would be the need to spot one or more vehicles at the Loj to make the short drive back to Averyville.

Don't forget Pharaoh Lake, Pharaoh Mt, Treadway Mt, Putnam Pond, Pyramid Lake, Rock Pond, Lillypad Pond, etc in the eastern part of the park.

I would agree with the posts in general, the original planned hike would be work with daypacks, never mind full packs. Having hiked with children of various ages and athletic shape, and having been on your route several times, I suggest that the boys might take away greater memories with a slightly less strenuous hike.

Remember you will need bear canisters for your food. Lake Colden is bear country! Take any of the suggestions for the hike. Keep the weakest hiker in mind. Even the strongest hikers will be glad just to be in the woods.

            Good luck.
