  • 4-6 hr hike recommendation mid Sept?

    Hi All,
    New to the forum.
In celebration of my wife's 50th we, and a group of 8 friends, want to hike a peak in the Adk mountains.

We are a pretty active and fit group (we run half marathons -- 13 miles), but are not experienced hikers with sophisticated gear.

We would like a challenging but fun hike, ideally with water features to view.

We are targeting the weekend of 9/17/16 and I'm hoping for some early fall foliage.

The rest of the time will be spent enjoying the bars and restaurants of Lake Placid -- where we plan to stay.

I am open to any suggestions.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Nick

Avalanche Lake from the Loj is a moderate walk to some spectacular watery scenery.

Big Slide by way of the Brothers has nice open views but no water.

St. Regis has views to water and the High Peaks.

All pretty close to LP and doable in 4-6 hours.

    Have a great hike!

Some photos of Avalanche Lake hikes show streams with rushing water. Is that along the route from Loj or a different trail?

          Thx.

The Brothers is an excellent fall hike and worthwhile even if you don't go all the way to Big Slide. There is water along the way but must be purified.

That's on the trails from the Loj. Another non-mountain-peak hike you could do with good water features would be a loop starting in St Huberts on Rte 73
up into the Ausable Club property. You could take in Beaver Meadow Falls, Rainbow Falls, Indian Head (cliffs with spectacular view of the Ausable Lakes & surrounding mountains) and Gill Brook, a small stream with many pretty cascades.

If the mountain peak part is more important, beside the options mentioned earlier, probably you could hike up Algonquin & back, from the Loj, in your time frame (the longer end of it). Only one waterfall, which tends to be dryish lots of the time, but the mountain itself is wonderful.

Nun-da-ga-o (Soda) Range might fit the bill. Loop hike, great views on the range, a pond, and you can tack on an out-and-back to Hurricane for more views. Not as challenging as most high peaks but also not as crowded.

That waterfall/stream is wonderful when you're heading back down on a hot day, and out of water!
