    Winter hiking with your dog

Do many of you take your dog with you when you overnight in the Dacks during the winter months? How do they handle the really low temperatures? Do the regulations concerning leashing your dog still apply at this time of year?
Are you hiding in the shadows - forget the pain, forget the sorrow.

I think it may be dependent on breed of dog.

I do short dayhikes with my dog (beagle) in winter on nicer days (above 20F). But, don't do overnights.

Leash rules still apply in winter AFAIK.

I never took my dog on an overnight during winter.

I did however hike with her a lot, my dog (an Australian Sheperd) was thick furred and could be out there all day no matter the temp without the cold getting to her. At least when she was younger, when she got a little older I kept the outdoors in extreme cold (<15°F) to only a few hours.

The only problem was snowballs that would form in her paws. Those could be a problem especially if it just snowed and we were blazing the trail.

I found Late Feb & March is the best time to hike with my dog, not so much that's warmer but by that time the snow is more packed down and was easier for my dog to walk on it without getting those stupid snowballs in the feet and without crashing through.
