    New here with a question

    Hi
I'm new here but I recognize many screennames from other hiking forums.
I'm interested in doing a moderate 25 mile backpack this upcoming labor day weekend in the Daks.
Any suggestions for an off the beaten path loop that may not see lots of trail traffic this weekend would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Sabrina

    Hi Sabrina!
    Welcome!
One I like is the Cold river loop. You can start at the Blueberry pond trailhead, off the Corey's road, and head south to Shattuck's clearing then up the Cold River to Duck Hole, then out on the Ward Brook Truck trail. It's a nice hike with little elevation change.
    Check it out!

Welcome, unadogger! I've enjoyed your posts on VFTT. Gary beat me to the Cold River suggestion, but I second it. You'll likely see people at Duck Hole, though, but it's worth it (Duck Hole, not the people!). There are also loop hikes you could carve out in the Pharaoh Mt. Wilderness area, visiting numerous ponds, and the option of climbing two mountains (Pharaoh, Treadway). I'm sure others will chime in with other possibilities.

          Hello !

Thanks for the warm welcome and quick responses!

Wphoto, I've seen that loop and it looks like it would make a great beginner snowshoe, something I hope to start doing this winter!

I would like a bit of elevation change, though, so the Pharoah Loop sounds great! Didn't I just read about this loop in Adk Explorer??

Thanks, everyone, and maybe our paths will cross over the weekend! If not, happy Labor Day to all and try not to labor too hard at anything other than enjoying the great outdoors!

Don't forget about the five ponds wilderness over near Cranberry Lake. If you want solitude then this is the place to go and it is quite beautiful. It's pretty flat but there is miles of possible loops and trails that can be hiked. You can hike into High Falls and do Cat Mountain and that would put you at about 17-18 miles. You could easily tack on more destinations to suit your mileage goals. I went to school up there (Ranger School) so I'm quite familiar with the area. As much as i love peak bagging and big mountains and the accompanying views i am always amazed when i head into the five ponds by how different and how beautiful it is back there.
do today what others wont, so you can do tomorrow what others cant

              thanks again

due to gas prices and TWO family BBQs, my weekend's been postponed. Thanks again for these many great suggestions!

Here's another vote for the Cold River Triangle. I used this as an ADK backpack trip at one point. I love everything about this loop.
