    lean-to

I am trying to find a list of all lean-tos in the Adks. A friend and I want to see how many we can stay at. I looked on the DEC site and did not find anything (I could have missed it.) Does anyone know of any websites or of any other ideas for a list of lean-tos.
    Thanks

Support your local forest ranger, get lost.

I think that they should host a survivor in the Adirondacks. Both teams get a over under rifle shotgun, box of matches, and a petersons edible plants field guide.

I don't know if there is a definitive list or not. Adirondac Magazine recently had a list of "adopted" leantos. I don't recall the number, but it was well over 100 (somewhere I remember seeing a figure of 142). I wonder if anyone knows the exact number.

I have a list in an old emphasize "real old" High peaks guide that list 247 lean-tos in the ADKs. When the ADK Mt Club shifted to creating regional guides they began to list lean-tos only in that region. But I see in the new Cental Guide they discontinued this. There is no list in that new guide. It is not to say they are consistant with the other new editions. I know the local library has the complete set of regional guides. Check your library to see if they have the ones produced in the nineties. This would give you a working list where you could at least get an idea.

The 247 in this 30 year old book can't be close to accurate. I suspect most are still there as many have been rebuilt. I know I did at least ten. I also know many have been removed and new ones built in various places. My guess is there may be 200 or more left. But see now you have a project as most upstate librarys should have the old books. As these things cost money librarys are not quick to buy the newest edition and it seems they keep the old. The local library has the last three versions of the high peaks and so on. Good luck it would be interesting to know whay you find.

Dick was right about 142 adopted lean-to's last year(he's so good )
This year the number is 147.

Save a tree...if you PM me your e-mail I can scan the list from Adirondac and send it to you. It is just a list of adopted lean-tos. I'm sure there are many more. Off hand I notice the more popular high peak lean-to's aren't on the list(the ones around Marcy Dam, Lake Colden, Flowed Lands)
