  • Black Flies

Hey all, headed up tonight. Are they out in force yet, or is it still early enough in the season that it isn't too bad?

    Thanks!!!

They are out in force here in the edge of Tug Hill but we are a bit lower in elevation.

How bad are the black flies?

My husband and I started hiking the ADK 46 in February and are very excited for spring conditions. I keep hearing about the black flies. How bad are they really? I have mapped out several hikes through May and June. I really do not want to lose the momentum we have gained over the past few months...

If we backpack the Sewards June 4-5 will we be eaten alive???

                  None today in Keene Valley.

They are out in the northern Siamese Ponds Wilderness -- out, but not biting.

                    Yet.

He's not kidding. Going to the western high peaks in early June is probably just about worst case. Go now (like right now, this coming weekend) or save that area until July. Late May through late June is a good time for the Catskills, or for drier peaks in the eastern hp, like Giant or Cascade, and on a windy day.
