  • ADK's new Forest Preserve series

I just posted an article on Adirondack Almanack about the changes to the ADK guidebooks.

    Read it here.

I have been looking for a copy of the Old Forge/Oswegatchie map #745 and everywhere I have looked has been out of stock for months except Amazon which is marked way up. I saw in your article that the updated one was supposed to come out in November. Do you know if it has come out yet or is still pending? I won't be needing one till August so I have plenty of time. Thank you very much.

This fall, ADK released the new High Peaks and Eastern Adirondacks guidebooks. Coinciding with this release, National Geographic released the Lake Placid/High Peaks (742) and Lake George/Great Sacandaga (743) maps.

I believe the other 3 Adirondack NG maps are currently out of print- Northville/Raquette Lake (744), Old Forge/Oswegatchie (745), and Saranac/Paul Smiths (746). I would assume that NG is waiting to release the new versions of these maps until the ADK releases the new guidebooks.

I don't know when these will be released, but I would have to imagine that if NG has made the old maps unavailable, the new ones will be out soon.

Thank you very much, that makes sense. I will keep an eye out for when they do become available.

I been waiting for Nat geo maps for months...they keep telling me to wait amother month over and over without an explanation of why.

          Just kind of frustrating.

I have pretty much switched over to using various free on-line maps, and just printing what I want to carry:

plus your local county GIS maps, in the event you need to be sure of exact state land / private land lines.

Don't know what's up with National Geographic. They are discontinuing their Topo series. I'm having a tough time trying to get AZ and NM to add to my collection.

I have the new Eastern Trails book. I'm disappointed that the map is no longer included. Having to make a second transaction for a map is a pain. I also worry any time a product goes to a big company like NG. I also feel the new guide deserves some fresh trail descriptions. Having some trails described exactly as they were in the guide from the early 90's is questionable to say the least. I still value the book as a good resource but feel the guides have taken a step back.
