Does anyone have a recommendation for a map of the Moose River Plains between and including Inlet and Indian Lake (it would be good if it included Old Forge, but not necessary)? I looked through all the maps at EMS the other day, but didn’t find any that covered the whole area. Thanks.

Thanks. I went to Gander Mountain, too and they have the National Geographic maps, but didn't have 744. I'll have to check back there.Comment

That makes sense. I went to the Fayetteville store on Saturday and looked through all the maps. I don't think (I could be wrong though) that they had the National Geographic maps there. Then I went to the Carousel store on Sunday, but didn't bother to look at the maps there, since I figured they would have the same ones as the Fayetteville store.Originally posted by John KEMS in Syracuse has itComment

The National Geo Maps ARE in the Carousel EMS. I just picked one up on the weekend. They're $10 and made of that tough plastic that lasts forever. My Acadia map has lasted for at least 10 years with constant use for 2 weeks every summer.Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass.

The Trails Illustrated Maps are a great item for a good overall view of the areas. The trails are color coded to match the correspoding trails in the ADK Guidebooks and they also shade private property so that you can differentiate it. The declination for true North is indicated in the compass roas and they are tyvec so water and constant folding/unfolding won't rip them.
Five maps cover all of the Dacks and the Lake George area. They are good enough that I spent my hard to come by cash on the whole five.
Do be aware however that if you intend to go in and hike/padle/camp, you should invest in the USGS quads or the National Geographic Topo Software for more detail."If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. Not sure which maps you are talking about as "bulky to hike with".Originally posted by John KAgreed very nice maps but bulky to hike with. ADK maps are more than adequate. The NLP map has that area also.
It really depends on what you are doing. if you are following a trail, all you need is to know where the trailhead is in theory. However, if you get lost.....
I know the Silver Lake Wilderness like my own backyard (Actually it IS my backyard). I can pretty much take you from anywhere to anywhere in there by memory.
But.......I always carry my topo(s) for the area. And my GPS and my compass. Of all the items necessary for survival in case one gets lost, misdirected, confused, disorientated, or temporarily misplaced the topo map is the least bulky survival gear you can carry.
The adk maps in the gidebooks are fine for an overview, but the most experienced outdoors people you will meet will always carry the quads that they will be hiking through."If future generations are to remember us with gratitude rather than contempt, we must leave them more than the miracles of technology. We must leave them a glimpse of the world as it was in the beginning, not just after we got through with it." Lyndon B. JohnsonComment
