    Scott Clearing Campling Mid-Late May

I'm planning to take my son on a hike/camp from Heart Lake to Scott Clearing either Memorial day weekend or the week before.

I made this trip myself about 10 years ago, but can't remeber if there is an Outhouse at the lean to there. This is a key point for my son. Can anyone confirm whether there is or isn't one?

In the past I've made a couple of trips in the High Peaks region this time of year and had no problems with black flies or any other insects. No need for repellent. Can anyone comment if I was just lucky or is this typically before black fly seaon in that area.

    Thanks.

There are several shelters indicated along the Indian Pass trail en-route to the clearing, but nothing at the clearing. I have not been there personally but if the topo is any indication there probably isn't a lean-to or outhouse.

From late-May through July there can be black flies. If you haven't seen them when in the high peaks during that time frame then you were indeed lucky.

Welcome to the forums and have a safe trip .

Page 147 of the 11th Edition of the High Peaks Guide lists the Scott Clearing Lean-to at the 3.81 mi point on the Indian Pass trail. At 20 years old I suppose I can't rely on that any longer. Maybe the lean-to is no longer here.

The Lean-to is still there and in great shape - I was in there this past December. It is on the left, abut a mile and a half or so beyond Rocky Falls Lean-to. Keep in mind that if there is high water, (spring runoff), you might not be able to cross over to Rocky Falls L/T.

Try as I might, I cannot recall if there was an outhouse, I remember the trail leading up to one, but I cannot recall using it.

You can also camp at Scott's Clearing if the L/T is full, it is a nice area.
        Good luck

A nice area, but the outhouse was in rather poor condition two summers ago. (depends upon one's comfort level!).

            Just bring a nose plug!
I never use the outhouses, they ALL stink to much for my comfort level. I remember going to one at Slide Brook, many years ago, it had literally overflowed and thought I would get sick. From that day forward I use the back of them instead!
