    volunteer work

thought i'd toss this idea out to the forum ...

would any forum members be interested in:

    a. adopting a trail through the ADK (see the most recent ADK magazine) ... perhaps something centrally located for our group.

    b. getting together as a group and doing some volunteer trail work, signing up for one of the planned ADK trail projects that are listed on the ADK website (and their magazine).

if not, fine ... if yes, then perhaps we can figure something out for this summer.

it might be a nice way for all of us to get together and help out.

        Hi Kevin,

I was going to post a similar question after having received my copy of Adirondac, but you beat me to it. Yes, I'd be interested.

        a. Adopting a trail requires participants to attend an ADK-sponsored workshop on Blue Mountain on Saturday, May 14. The trail can be one of the 70 trail sections "enrolled" in the program, or a different one, provided no one else is officially maintaining it. I'm not sure how ADK Forum would define "centrally located for our group" when the "group" includes people from various parts of NY, MA, CT, NJ, and Canada (at least).

        b. There are several established projects one can sign up for: JBL Fly-In; Spring Work Weekend at Heart Lake Property; Lake George Property Workday; Johns Brook Valley Trail Work Weekend; National Trails Day (Cranberry lake-Wanakena); Campground Host Program. Most of these are late spring, not summer.

        Anyway, color me interested.

        Dick

There are a few ADK club volunteer activites on the events calendar (you know, that thing that no one ever looks at! lol). We discussed this last Fall and Peter Hickey was gracious enough to provide some advance dates to get up on our calendar. I forget if he was representing the 46rs or the ADK Club...

The dates are subject to change and the ones on the ADK club and 46r site are more accurate (in case there are any changes/conflicts). If anyone from the ADK Club or the 46rs wants to post their volunteer activites please feel free.

As a group from ADK Forum we can't just go out and start working without prior permission from the DEC. Gary looked into it and I forget where he left off. We could join another already approved group which is fine by me.

Maybe the ADK is the way to go since we couldn't get the DEC to respond to my calls last summer. I would be looking at it with interest, although I have a pretty full plate with construction starting on my property this spring. Keep me in the loop.

My thoughts were directed at participating in a planned ADK event ... I wouldn't even consider trying something independently.

There are two trail projects that might work out well for forum members ... one is a weekend deal at JBL ... May 20-22 (hike in Friday night, work all day Sat and 1/2 day Sunday, then hike out). The other is a one day event on June 18th, on the Marcy Dam trail.

Most of the other projects are multiple day events and I know I cannot commit for something of that length. I'm sure that probably holds true for many other forum members (and lurkers ).

As Dick has mentioned, there's a workshop on May 14th at Blue Mtn ... if anyone is interested in just joining that workshop to learn about how to do trail maintenance properly, then maybe some of us can attend/participate in this event as well. I think it would be kinda helpful to have some idea of what's expected before actually doing the trail work.

I know that several forum regulars are off in the woods this weekend and probably haven't seen these posts ... so I'll wait until the middle of next week to see if we have more ppl interested before I explore this topic further with the ADK.

I'm in for the 14th as well.

ANything else, as long as it doesn't interfere with something already planned..Memorial Day Weekend, second week in July which includes the first weekend, and the third week in August.

Kevin, (KWC) see what you can set up for a group of us.

                    lending a hand

                    Hi all,

I would be more than happy to do some volunteer work. I have worked on a few volunteer trail crew projects run through the ADK. They are a lot of fun, and damn rewarding. As for the may date I am not sure if I can make it, but like the idea of using pre-existing projects. Grass roots and independant efforts are great, but sometimes frowned upon by the "man". There are a lot f areas that could really use some help. I can say yes to helping, my spring-fall calander gets pretty hectic, especially over some weekends. Hope this thread gets more people interested.

I'm interested in clearing blow downs. I have a 2 ton come along and a decent machette. I'm interested in the southern adirondacks. Mainly wilcox lake trail and bennett, middle and murphy loop or anything in the southern region period. I'm scheduled to work that day but I'm starting to feel a little cough coming on. I might have to call in for this one. Jason

there's another one day trail work event in September up around the Loj (Sept 18) along with an October event at a location yet to be determined.

I'm in for the May 14th event at Blue Mtn.

Jackie kindly reminded me that we'd be in Atlanta on may 20th so the JBL project is out for me.

I'll be calling the ADK this week for more information.

I just looked at my calendar for the 14th and see that I've got paddlefest in Inlet I've already committed too with a couple folks. I'm not going to be able to make the trail work instruction. I hope my 28 years of experience will count for something with the ADK.
I'd be willing to help anyway I can.

You could also volunteer to adopt a leanto - here are several available now. You could then host an ADKforum get-together L/T maintenance trip bi-annually.

There isn't a lot of work to do. Clean, sweep, remove trash, trim back bushes in the local area, add dirt to the privy and just general overseeing the area.
Check the recent Adirondac for a list of stil available L/Ts
