    Bearvault Lids

Bearvault sent me two new lids. The change is a second tab located about two or three inches from the original tab. I emailed the company about my two canisters, and without asking any questions they sent me the replacements. There aren't a whole lot of companies out there that take care of their customers like that. They didn't even charge me shipping costs.

I asked for two, one for each of mine but I only recieved one. I also noticed they changed how it was reinforced and its stiffer and thicker near the tabs that are on there.

I asked for one three times and was told three times it was in the mail. So far none recieved.

I bought the 350 for my son to use on an 8-day trip centered at marcy dam (split 4 by 4). When the lid didn't come in I bought him a bear keg. I don't have a very good opinion of bear vault right now. All talk, no action.

You have to understand there testing the new lids now. 3-4 weeks is very long, but these were for testing the new lids, not replacing the old ones as of yet. I imagine they had a tone of requests for the new ones. I was about to email back why I hadn't recieved mine yet, and there it was in the mail today.

In all the lids have an indentation between the two tabs that curves as if deflect tampering and it's made of a more rigid material that the previous ones.

We just received the lids this week; the one we receivd 3 weeks ago had the bump area too thick/hard to press in in a freezer test, so the mold had to be reworked- no sense sending out a lid that will be hard to operate on a cold morning.

Mail to the east coast takes about 1 week. We have responded to every request for a lid; "timetohike" perhaps your's will arrive early next week? If not, drop me a line. We have sent our lids to all of those who requested them for testing.

These lids are for testing in the Marcy Dam area. If they work with that gifted bear, then we will offer them to other Marcy Dam area hikers. If they don't work, then there is no point blindly sending them out to non- testers.

Outside this area, there are no problems with BV350/400 models.

Did the bear actually get the lid off after it was fully closed, or was the lid only partially closed? I have a hard time openning these lids!!!

I have had to rely on a female companion now to open my bearvault with the new lid. It seems they are not well acclimated to male folk.

Well, hopefully the "Marcy Bear" is male.

I posted last night and the lid arrived today. Wish I could get everything else to work that way in my life.

Unfortuately though it is too late for my son's trip last week. He might go back in late June but that may be too late for your test.

I put the new lid on as soon as I got it today. Now I have to find a bear to get it off. Either the tabs are larger or the lid is very stiff. I'm going to keep working it to see if I can soften it up a bit.

I now have more bear canisters than the number of bears I've ever seen in the wilds. but they are useful for keeping the racoons, pine martins, and mice out of our food cache. And the BV350 is the perfect size for my 1-2 nighters in the local state forest. Unless I'm camping in my brother's backyard in Camillus NY I probably won't run into a bear around here.

                          to opon the lids

to open the lid easily, you have to press on the "textured" area only; if you press above this the lid is hard to open.

Slide your fingernail down to the bump on the lid and press in with your fingernail; I find it easier to use the side of my nail rather than the top of it.

If you need any help figuring out the lid, take it to Marcy Dam and find the bear.
