    Inexpensive Hotel/Motel

Well a friend of mine and I have our first winter peak planned for the 23rd of February. We are going to hike Wright and maybe another on Sunday depending on how we feel when the alarm goes off. Can someone recommend an inexpensive hotel/motel close to the loj? How are the Jack Rabbit or cascade Inn?

    Thanks
    Mike

I'm pretty sure the Jackrabbit burned down this summer. Not sure about the other one. There is a motel in Lake Placid across from Howard Johnson's and some steakhouse on that hill across from the shopping center that had rooms for $45 when I was there last. There is always the Keene hostel too. Good luck.

Cascade Inn is $50 for two double beds. Stayed there this weekend before climbing Wright. Warm, clean, cable tv but no wi-fi. Very firm mattress. No coffee pot or hot pot so bring your own. No cups or ice bucket. I will stay there again for the price. Just a 1/4 mile from the loj road

I tried to get a room with wi-fi but they were full due to a race this weekend and some full moon get together so we are staying at the Cascade. We won't be getting there until 11:30 Friday night so all I need is a place to sleep for a few hrs and by the time we get back all I will want to do is eat and hit the pillow again. Any have to eat at places in the area?

Lake Placid Pub and Brewery.....possibly the best after hike meal and brew you can find. At least in my opinion. In winter, nothing beats their Bangers and Mash, chased with a few Ubu Ales!
Oh man, I just made myself hungry and real thirsty.

I stayed at the Cascade a few weeks ago. I agree with what timetohike said, but I'll add that rooms look like they are straight out of 1950. It sounds like it's cool for what you want though. I have no issues with the dacor, and you can't beat the price and location, but it may not be for everyone.

The econolodge in lake placid is almost always $50 in winter. Don't call ahead, just show up and ask how much for a room. Hot tub and a small pool included. A bit out of town for walking after drinks, but very reasonable prices and nice beds with cable tv. No idea about wifi though. Continental breakfast on the way out also.

I stayed at Van Hoevenberg Cabins last week - they have one with bunks that is about $98..they do have WiFi too.

DON'T miss the opportunity to hit the Lake Placid Pub. Have fun on Wright looking for the wreckage.

I stayed at the Econolodge in Placid but it was $80 and the place was almost empty that night. They do have very good wifi and the hot tub is great after a long day of hiking but is only open until 10 pm. The "continental" breakfast consists of coffee, orange juice, powdered donuts, and english muffins. People were all nice and place was clean.

I called the econolodge and there is a 3 night minimum so cascade inn is going to be the place to sleep. Thanks for all the info everyone. I love tasting new micro brews so thanks adkdremn for the heads up on the Lake Placid pub. The trip has now been moved to March 7-9 so if anyone else will be up there let me know, I would love to meet up with a few people from the site.

If you like microbrews, Lake Placid also has the Adirondack Steak & Seafood Restaurant - last time I was there they had a great 10% pale ale!

Be aware that the Empire State Games will be held that same weekend, so get your room early as they will be filling up fast.

The trick to the $50 room at the econolodge is to not call and just show up. If you call, they have to give you the rate as per the hotel. When I just walk in, and we did this just two weeks ago(it was empty), the quoted price was 50 bucks. I have called ahead and have been quoted up to 149 per night. They will give the AAA discount on top of the 50 bucks also. Paying more than that is a robbery, especially when the place is empty.

I did just show up at about 7 pm on a Sunday night and the place was empty, but they quoted me $80 which I thought was fair for the room and the amenities. Next time I'll ask if they can do better on the rate and suggest that they match the Cascade inn's rate. I think they might take the $50 rate when the place is deserted, as were the rest of the motels in Placid that night.
