    snow covered leantos?

    Hi all,

Considering the heavy snowfall as of late, I'm wondering if I should anticipate having to dig out a leanto when I head up to Lake Colden next week. I've been hearing that there's about 3 feet of snow on the ground and perhaps some of the leantos have not been dug out yet.

You don't need to dig out too much. the snow makes a good windbreak.

Skyclimber has some pretty amazing pics of lean tos in the winter. Maybe she could post them, if not they're in another thread somewhere, I'll see if I can find them!

I doubt if you will have to dig out a whole lot. Perhaps just a path to get in. Also, like Hawk said, leaving the snow around the opening, shelters you from the wind even more, and keeps more heat in.

I was at one of the colden lean to's yesterday, no digging required to get in. But the floors are wet from melted snow, which will probably just be a bit frozen by the time you get there...There are brooms in most of them to brush out any accumulated snow.

Thanks for the info, mate. I think my trip is going to be postponed, since I came down with a stomach bug yesterday. Also, my hiking buddy has a cold. We're probably leaving after New Years now. Oh well!

dont let a little projectile vomiting keep you out of the woods, it adds character to the trip report!!

Darn right! You haven't really earned your stripes until you vomit on a trip and have it freeze to the deck of your snowshoes.

I guess some of those half digested corn chunks stuck in my beard will serve as a tasty snack later on.
