    Peak Week To Leaf Peep?!?!

Hi everyone! I was just wondering, what is the best weekend you think to plan a trip to see the most beautiful leaves? I am thinking of coming up some time in mid to late September???

    Thanks!!

Depends quite a bit on elevation and north/south location within the ADK region. I always figured the week leading up to Columbus Day to be the brightest colors in middle regions.

There's really no such thing as a "peak time" for leaf peeping. The idea that there is one moment when the coloring is at its absolute best is a myth concocted by tourism agencies!

As Wldrns said, it really varies by elevation/location. But the process is also spread out by individual tree species as well. Red maples are already starting to show color here and there. They peak first, followed by the sugar maples and birches, followed by the beeches, and ending with the tamaracks. The process begins in late August and ends in mid-October, but there is no one time when all of these trees are at their peak at once.

That being said, during the timeframe you plan to come here there should be lots of color somewhere!

this site will post an updated map when the time comes. My experience has been that it's pretty accurate.

The tourism agencies have it right though,( lots of money riding on it ) and the easyest thing to peg down. the three weeks last of september and first 2 of October are a sure thing, In Columbia CT it has been the third week of Oct ( south of Albany) for as long as I can remember, never changes, as you move up the line to the high peaks you can reduce by one week, High peaks last week of Sept, Schroon, first week of october, Saratoga second week of Oct, etc, some years are better color wise, you need warm days and cold nights in september to get the optimum color, the lack of water this Year will have an effect on color or the lack of brilliance.
