    Piseco-Pawley Rd. question

Someone just recommended a specific bog that I visit along this Hamilton County backroad, but did not record the mileage. Their one reference point was that the bog was adjacent a sign-in register, called Ferris Lake Wild Forest, possibly for snowmobilers to sign in.

I have traveled this road many times from Rt. 29A in Stratford to Rt. 10 near Piseco, and do not recall a register for trails or anything. The road is about 21 miles long so without a few more hints, I do not think it likely to find a specific bog (for photographing bog plants and birds)

    Any help appreciated!

    Powley-Piseco Road

That would be Mud Pond. I've got Barbara McMartin's book here and it gives the mileage from the Stratford end as 15.4. It's about a half mile past the trail to Clockmill Pond. There's a snowmobile trail register about 100 yards beyond Mud Pond (closer to Rte 10), on the other side of the road. You can actually see the pond from the road. The trail down to it starts right by a forest preserve sign. It's a quaking bog. Lots of pitcher plants. If you're there at the right time you may see rose pogonia and other orchids. Just exercise due caution. A couple of years ago someone drowned in Mud Pond.
