    Flyfishing trip report & recommendation

Spent the morning on the north branch of the Saranac. Was able to beat the rain and land 15 native brookies and wild browns by noon on nymphs and dries!

Wish I could say I did it all on my own, but I have to give credit where its due. Since I didn't want to fish my usual beats on Memorial Day weekend, I went out with Rich Garfield (www.flyfishtheadirondacks.com). Rich has been guiding up here forever and knows the river systems better than anyone I've ever met. He was able to put me on productive water where I didn't have to share the water with ANYONE!

He's also a great teacher and I would definately recommend Rich to anyone.

Sounds like you had one heck of a day!!!!!

Must `ve been alot of fun, especially being in solitude(on Memorial Day Weekend) ....that in itself sometimes makes the day ,even without catching fish....but, you must`ve had some annoying visitors buzzing around ,dressed in black....
"Get your mind off trout,if you can.I know they`ve got you.I can see it. Every fraternity of sufferers knows its brothers.Trout hook men;men don`t hook trout.Better try and throw the hook while you can.By the time you`re a grown man there probably won`t be a pure trout healthy enough to fiddle with"... Dude, the bugs were ridiculous. Luckily, I came prepared with a headnet, Skin So Soft and 100% Deet. I only ended up with two or three bites on my hands.

The solitude is great. I wish I had the time to explore all of the different trout streams. When Rich and I were driving to the Saranac, he must've pointed out six or seven other places to fish that were just a short hike in from the road. I didn't even know there was water back in half of them.

That's why I like to use a guide once in a while. A good one like Rich can pretty much craft whatever type of experience you're looking for. I told him I wanted solitude, and a place where I could practice my nymphing on native populations, and BAM...he put me right there.

I drove up 9N and 86 through Wilmington and Ausable Forks today and just shook my head at the number of people beating on the same small sections of the river.
