    Newcomb Lake

    Hi,
I'm thinking of running my canoe into newcomb lake next week and setting up base and do some exploring. Is this a high use area ? Are there lean-to's ? If it was to get crowded how hard would it be to cart my boat (35#) into Moose pond ?
    Thanks

The ADK High Peaks guide says that there are 2 lean-tos, and they are supposed to have very beautiful views from them.

The one on the south side of the lake is in a beautiful spot. I couldn't tell you what the crowds are like there, because when I stayed there it was in the middle of February. If you have time take a look at the Great Camp. It’s well worth it.

I hiked there in late August and it was not crowded. I do not beleive you will find many people there this time of year. The walk up the road is easy. The scenery is amazing. If you run into the gentleman working on the Great Camp, Mr. Frenette, tell him I said hay. People have been know to roll out a bed roll on the porch of the great camp at dark to sleep....but I have no first hand knowledge of such a practice.

            Newcomb Lake

My ex and I tried to camp there on the 4th of July about 15 years ago and it was so crowded we couldn't get a designated site and the underbrush was so thick we couldn't find a non-designated site. We were planning on staying 3 or 4 nights so we had a lot of gear. She wasn't in very good shape and by the time we made it back to the car at nightfall I think she was delirious. Probably one of the reasons I got the heave ho! I've done a LOT more carefree hiking, camping and paddleing since then Definitely a great place to stay but I'd steer clear of holiday weekends unless you can get there early!
