private lands adjacent to wilderness areas...

that you would like to see added to those wilderness areas -

    I'll start:

    Tahawus (the entire area)

IP lands adjacent to Siamese Ponds Wilderness AND West Canada Lakes Wilderness.

I have to say I'm rather pleased with the way the Tahawus track compromise worked out. OSI was able to prevent the property from falling into the hands of developers. Much of the property will go into the forest preserve while OSI will retain the historic sights witch are not only important to the Adirondacks, but also to the entire country.

I think we got sold a bill of goods with this - there is nothing of any importance there and what little decrepit man-made structures that remain should just be ripped out and taken to the landfill.

Put a plaque by what's left of the furnace and call it a day.

Working forest? Wish there was enough money to purchase the whole damn thing outright.

IP doesn't own those lands anymore, if I'm not mistaken.

I disagree. There are multiple layers of history on the site. Most of the buildings at Adirondac were once part of the Tahawus Club. The Tahawus Club was first large scale fishing and hunting club in the Adirondacks, and most of the buildings date back about 100 years or more, with the exception of the MacNaughton Cottage. The MacNaughton Cottage was built in the 1834 and is the only structure remaining from the original mining operation at Tahawus; it predates the furnace by 20 years. The blast furnace (built from 1849 – 1854) is a good example of the transition of furnace technology of that time period. It’s in far better shape than most furnaces from that time period. In addition to this, it is the only known furnace in existence in this country to still have the water powered air compressor pistons intact and still on site. Most were dismantled and ended up being used as scrape metal during World War II. Other structures that are being retained by OSI are the Mount Adams firetower and observers cabin. The observers cabin is the only original standardized cabin left in the Adirondack Park.

I don’t know much about the “Working” forest parcel, so I’m not going to really comment on that other than it surrounds the property the NL is retaining and may be acting as a buffer zone.

Over 6800 acres is still being added to the forest preserve, which is still a significant area of land.
