    first-time camping trip with dog

I'm pondering an April pre-black fly one night southern Adirondack destination for a first time camping evening with our 7 month old Yellow Lab. More wild than an official campground but not a tough backpacking trip. Water is essential. One of the challenges is thinking of a southern wilderness water thas has a sandy shore, not common on southern waters. This could be a car backroads camping spot or under 1 mile backpacking spot. Suggestions welcome.

Thirteenth Lake. You can drive up to a gate and there are about 6 sites a short walk away. There is a nice sandy beach there. It gets crowded in the summer but should not be too bad now. Bears are a problem there so take proper precautions.

A great suggestion! I wonder if Tirrell Pond (on the NPT) would work as well? Nice pond, sandy beach, lean-to, relatively few people, but a longer hike 3-4 miles or so).

        Rock Lake

Try this small lake off of Rt 30 between Blue Mtn Lake and Long Lake ... it's about 1 1/2 miles along the trail to Rock River, and then a short bushwack to the lake, which should be really easy this time of year (without all the undergrowth). Big wide sandy beach, with shallow waters ... in summer it's a nice location because the breeze keeps the bugs at bay! It's a really nice spot for a summer picnic on a sunny day, we really like it.

there is another access trail to the lake a short way farther north on Rt 30, but then you'd have to canoe over to the sandy beach (this trail is less than a mile long).

Once a year, go some where you've never been before.
