    Anybody know?

I was thinking about going over to Piseco and take the short hike up to Echo Cliffs and was wondering if anybody has any info about trail conditions. Oh does the trail continue to the summit or does it end at the cliffs? Thanks for input.

I hike it in the summer. The trail is an unmarked path that starts off the snow mobile trail near one of the bridges (the second one I think). It follows up the ravine below the cliffs and then arcs around to the top of cliffs. I didn't see any other paths, but it's open woods. And eventually you would run into another snow mobile trail. Can't imagine it's too bad in the winter since it's not high or far north.

      Echo cliffs

Um, are you two sure you're talking about the same place? Echo Cliffs in Piseco, to my knowledge the trail does not continue up to the summit of Panther Mountain. Rivet, it sounds like you might be describing Good Luck Cliffs off Route 10.

We were just up there a couple of weeks ago and at that time there was no need for even snowshoes. Im sure things have changed since but the hike is pretty mellow (.8 miles) and it has a nice payoff(cliffs). I dont believe there is any trail that continues on to a summit. Have fun!

Thanks yes I was talking about Echo cliffs in Piseco. I saw in a real old guidebook the following statement, " The trailhead sign indicates an ascent of 1148 feet. This is the verticle climb to the summit not to Echo cliff." That statement suggested without saying one way or another the trail went to the summit of Panther Mt. The guide only describes the trail to the cliffs saying it is a 725 foot climb. I wondered if the dec went to the bother of adding the additional 425 feet did the trail initially go to the summit? Is the trail still there, was there ever a trail or are the cliffs the end of the line?

Having climbed this many times, I can offer the following:

There once was a trail to the "summit".....but now it only leads to the cliffs...the 1906 topo shows the old trail. It went into the col, then split towards the cliffs and to the summit.

The 1954 map actually shows the trail going to the south, nowhere near the cliffs or the summit.

Thanks for the input, it seems the trail ends at the cliffs. They may be a worthwhile short hike when I am in the area. But perhaps not worth a ninety minute each way drive. Who knows may do that anyway, again thanks for the responses.
