    Campfires at JBL

If you rent a lean-to at JBL are campfires permitted there?

Not much explaining to do. It's in the High Peaks and that's the regulation. I figured you couldn't, but didn't know if there was some special exception since their the ADK Mountain Club. I guess that wouldn't be fair though.

Try the Western High Peaks - not as many trails to peaks as in the Eastern HP's but it's less visited - hence campfires are allowed! And if you ask me, what is camping without solitude and campfires?

Are you sure? They are on private land. I would suspêct, however, that the ADK extends the DEC rule.

They honor (and are held to) the same rules as the forest preserve lands that surround them. Fact.

But not at their land around the Loj.

How do they not acknowledge and obey DEC rules around the Loj?

As of a few years ago when I rented the Krandell Lean-to, they did not. When I registered it and paid (over the phone) I seem to remember they sent me a phamlet or something with the rules on it with my receipt. No fires was on the list I remember. There was no fire pit at the site either.

Not sure if that's changed, I tend to doupt it.

It's private land, so in some cases (unsure about this case as Tim explained in the prior post) the rules for state lands doesn't apply.

I don't think the Loj property is actually part of the High Peaks, is it? In that case fires would be OK.

But the ADK closely aligns itself with the NYS DEC and follows the rules of the particular wilderness area they are in - in this case the Eastern High Peaks - I'm almost certain.

That is true, but they could deviate from it as they are given some freedom depending on the landowner's contract with the state. I'm not familiar with the letter of the law in this case, only know that part of private ownership is being able to do things you couldn't otherwise on state land...

There isn't a lot that property owners can deviate from.
