    given the rain....

i was hoping to make a run at haystack from the garden sometime this weekend.

    any thoughts?
how are the trail conditions given the rain.

(not so worried about getting wet, but puddle jumpin along trails, and more importantly the condition of the trails on the ascent, are certainly on my mind.)
How easily we might walk onward into the opening landscape, absorbed by new pictures, and by thoughts fast succeeding each other, until by degrees the recollection of home was crowded out of the mind, all memory obliterated by the tyranny of the present, and we were led in triumph by nature.

The section of trail that goes into John's Brook after JBL (between Bushnell Falls and Slant Rock), as well as some of the other water crossings, could be challenging depending on water levels. I'm planning a Sunday / Monday trip right now and it's very tough to think of anyplace that isn't going to offer some form of obsticle (either mud, standing water, or potentially dangerous water crossings).

There won't be many people reporting back because I'm willing to bet most have steered clear of the high peaks lately due to the excessive rain. Whomever ventures out this weekend will likely be the first in days on those trails.

Not crazy, but maybe 'unwise'? No matter what you're going to encounter mud. How much standing water and how high the streams will be is a question unanswered until someone goes there and reports back. If you can find the phone number for a Ranger in that area they may be of more service. Maybe even the Lake George office of the ADK Club, since they maintain JBL and may have a report somewhere from a maintenance crew and such... just some ideas.

You can try the ADK Loj for weather and trail conditions...

ADK LOJ: (518)523-3518 for a recording, or (518)523-3441 is the regular LOJ phone number

and to you, good sir: thanks for the number.

just called the recorded message and any last minute thoughts of making the run went by the boards.

              water's arisen.
              trails are muddy.

guess it should be expected, but then i have a tendency ta get my teeth into an idea like a dog chompin on a fresh, meaty bone. who knows, but i may have made the mistake of crossing the bridge and takin' the road to keene. so its a slog here on a ridge line, where i can opt out w/ much greater ease and grace.

(as a newbie i particularly appreciate the introduction to what appear necessary resources, like the update phone numbers. nice to belong to a helpful community. thanks!)
