    46'er Question

How does the 46'er organization feel about people joining who are going to take an eternity to hike all the peaks? Here's my situation, I've hiked only 3 peaks in 5 years. The first was in 2000 and I had no correspondence with the organization. My second was in 2001 and the third was just a few weeks ago. Is it too late for me to start correspondence and count those hikes?

I'm not too good with math, but if I've hiked only 3 peaks in 5 years, and I'm 29 y/o, I should be done by the time I'm like 72.

I'm hoping someday my trips to the ADKS will pick up and I can do multiple peak trips. Maybe when my kids are old enough and want to hopefully join me we can work on it together.

    46'r's have no time limits

Go ahead and write to them now. There is no time limit.

I did not know about being a 46'r until I was nearly half through. Been writing to them ever since, mostly about once a year, sometimes more often.

I have enjoyed the writing - helps me re-live the hikes.

I am going after #46 this weekend - Allen. My son, who got me started on this and who finished 3 years ago, will be joining me, as will a couple of friends who have shared some adventures with me along the way.

After I have completed my hike, I will need to write up that hike, and then fill out a questionnaire to finish my paper work. I have been at it a little over 7 years, and I know I am not even close to being the person who took the longest time.

It's a journey - not a race. Good luck and good hiking Ron

I wonder what the longest gap before starting and finishing is? I'll have to check their archives, maybe I can shoot for that special recognition.

I also noticed on their website it said something about sending pictures with your letter. Is that a requirement? I don't know if I have any I want to part with.

There are hikers who have taken 50 years to complete their quest. As RonandJon stated, it's a journey, not a race. Enjoy your peaks and climbs.

The pictures we talk about, are of yourself. We really don't want scenery pics as we already know what that looks like. We are more interested in seeing a face with a letter for us to write. If you don't want to part with your picture, just scan and print it off your computer. We don't return photos, they go into your files.

It's never too late to write your letter. If you don't know the exact dates, estimate them. We go on the Honor System.

          Took me more than 20yrs

I started when I was 8, but didn't finish until I was 37. I was gone for about 15 years...then caught the bug again. No time limit. Enjoy it as you go!

Ron, congrats in advance on #46. Be sure to catch the trail north from the summit area and catch the views into panther gorge .

I'm one of those hurried hikers. I caught the bug March 15 2003 and finished October 8th 2004 (I think, it was about 20 months). Now I'm closing in on my second reound. Guess I just like to hike!

              11 years

It took me 11 years to hike all the high peaks. My cohorts and I started out just doing about two weekends a year up north. When we got to the 17th mountain we decided to take a week to ten days each summer and explore the mountains further. It was a great journey. I have an entire wall dedicated to pictures of all our various trips. I look at it and in an instant remember where we were and how I felt. The older I get the more I appreciate those pics and the friendships forged along the way.

It's worth noting that geopgraphy (or most importantly how far someone is from the dacks) has an impact on how quickly one completes the list. Most of the time people who finish in months or just a few years live within 2 hours of the peaks, and those further away typically take longer. I've met exceptions (as is true for every rule), but this trend is mostly true. Not the most brilliant thing I've ever posted, but sometimes the obvious answer eludes us.

No time limit. Just hike! A friend of mine will be finishing his 46 in October, about 25 years after his first peak. Doesn't matter how long it takes, just do it. You're a 46er no matter how long, or fast you can accomplish this feat.

                    From the Adirondack 46er roster:

                    46er #2529, Anne P. Dennis, first peak Haystack (1926), 46th peak Allen (9/4/88)

That's 62 years and that is the longest time between first and 46th peak.

                      Ron,

Good luck on Allen this weekend and enjoy your day. I also finished my 46 on Allen and really like that peak. Let us know how it turns out.

Anne Dennis, #2529, has me beat. I'm in the same ballpark as DLHiker. Started on July 24, 1977 and finished on July 7, 2003 - 26 years.

It's taking even longer for the winter round: started on January 26, 1980 and I've complete a mere 18.

                          46'r at Last!

                          Mike

Thanks for the good wishes. Scoutmaster Tom and I were successful this weekend, taking our time, three-days worth, as always. Allen was rugged but very beautiful. Jon, who drove home from Boston, and Tom's son Mike joined us at the base of Skylight for a celebration. I will post a trip report when I have some more time - oh, yeah, and do my last write up, finish my log, and send in my questionnaire to the 46er's!

Just to get back on topic - 7 years and 2 weeks for me. thanks. Ron
