  • most unique lean-to list

After seeing Justin's recent trip report showing the North Lake lean-to I thought it would be interesting to see a compilation of the most unique lean-tos in the park based on either construction or location. The coolest one that I have been to is Tom's Rock lean to on Lower Saranac:

  • #2
    Chub Pond #1,
    And Woodhull Lake.

I dont have photos, just memories.

Most of my lean to camping was done in shelters built after the 50's.
But I remember one that was at the outlet of Marcy Dam that had no floor, only spruce boughs.
That was in the early 60's.
I'm sure that it's gone now as well as the dam.
I remember that the ADK had a toboggan stored at the dam to use for winter emergencies.

The Northern Lean to's on the Coldriver. They were built out of the cedar that was cut there. They are seldom used. Where they are on the river make it the ideal setting.

I have only been there once, but would agree with you regarding the setting.

On the west shore not far from the outlet, almost directly across from #1.
It was rebulit a few years ago after the old one had been burned down.

That was fun. A lot of work, but fun. That firepit was almost my grave site and marker.

Lots of discussion about this lean-to not too long ago.

                        Justin,
It's been quite a while since I was at the lake.
At that time there was a horse barn on the east shore and two lean to's next to it.
Farther up on that shore there was one on a knoll and a little past that, one on a rocky point.
On the west shore, there was one on "Watch Rock" and a bigger one just south of it.
There was also one at the head of the lake near the foot of Pharaoh Mt. "Split Rock".
I started camping there in the late 60's. At that time there was a ranger cabin at the outlet. A seasonal ranger stayed there and there were rental boats and canoes.
I accessed the lake from Beaver Pond Rd. using my old jeep to drive in. It took longer to drive in than to walk it.
That all changed in the early 70's when the state declared it a "wilderness area".
The cabin was burned down and the concrete boat ramp was removed.
                        Jim
