    Waterfalls

Being a photographer, I'm always looking for beautiful waterfalls.
What's your favorite? and where did you find it?

Well, so far my favorite would be a non-adirondacks waterfall, the Kaaterskill Falls in the Catskills:

Haven't seen a lot of falls yet, and the few I've seen in the ADKs were much smaller then Kaaterskill...

    Shelving Rock Falls:

    and Rainbow Falls:

      Kaaterskill is incomparable IMHO.

OK Slip Falls in the 'daks is beautiful. I beleive it is the highest in the ADKs.

I also love Auger Falls south of Speculator.

Buttermilk falls, Splitrock, High Falls Gorge, etc., etc.

My favorite is to come across a "hidden" waterfall in the deep woods while bushwacking.

I love to look over topo maps for good waterfalls on a bushwack. Infact, I like to bag remote waterfalls, more than peaks. I've been eyeing the streams that flow out of the the Sawtooth mountains and run into Ward brook. I may be doing some bushwacking up there in the near future.

        So where is Slip Falls?

        Kevin,
Nice Shots! You've got 2 there I haven't been too yet, Thanks!

When I did the Oswegatchi this year, I noticed that there's a waterfall up the Robinson river, that flows into the Oswegatchi. Has anyone been up there?

I love Beaver Meadow Falls at the base of the Gothics trail in the Ausable valley. It's a beautiful spot, with the beaver meadow and the view of Sawteeth.

Another favorite is Fairy Ladder Falls, on the west slope of Nippletop. It requires a short bushwhack east from the trail just south of the trail junction to Mt. Colvin. It was a favorite place of Grace Hudowalski and there is a nice picture of it in John Winkler's book, A Bushwhacker's View of the Adirondacks.

            Redfield and Giant

Redfield has some spectacular falls in the spring that are over 100 feet I would have to say and the falls on Giant you can see from Route 73!!!!!!!!

My favorite so far is Rainbow Falls. Kevin has a couple of pictures of it above from two different views. My friend Dave took me to it my first time around Sawteeth, Gothics, Armstrong and Upper Wolfjaw. Missed Lower Wolfjaw, had to go back and do it all again to get that one. That's where Kevin got the pictures. Definately my favorite.

                O K Slip Falls

OK Slip Falls (250 ft. drop) is located near the blue ledges area of the Hudson. It is on private land. Maybe owned by Northern Frontier--the boys camp accessed off 28 near Indian Lake. I visted there years ago under their permission

Barbara McMartin has info about it in her book "Discover the Central Adirondacks"

                  Thanks Ron!
I'm looking at my Central Mountains map and I see it on the outlet of OK Slip pond. It looks like about a 500' drop to the Hudson. Is there a trail to the bottom? it looks ugly on the map! ...But that's OK...Ugly is my middle name!
Looks like a good spot to do some repelling...

I'll have to pick up the book, and see if I can find Northern Frontier.
                  Thanks!

Check this link for the camp. The picture under the Father/Son link appears to have OK Slip in the background. I know they do rapel down the face.

                      West Branch Gorge

I have a bunch of "small" falls close to me, but somewhat remote.

There are five falls on the West Branch of the Sacandaga and it is a bushwhack to get to them. Each is different and all are awesome during the spring thaw.

There is also a falls on Jimmy Creek off West River Road (another bushwhack) in Wells.

Of course I also have Auger, Austin, and Christine Falls local to me and there are falls on the other Jimmy Creek off route 8.

I have photos of the falls posted at http://siouxme.com/blog/

(*just fixed the link for you -- Kevin*)

                          Hi Redhawk!
I love the Wells area! I've photographed each of those falls you mentioned, and will be back again. That is a beautiful area! I went into Jimmy Creek falls over Columbus day this past year. I was hiking with my beagle, and fell through the sod, crossing a bolder field above the falls. I went in to my waist. (not good!) I camped at Whitehouse on the Sacandaga. I like your site. Nice shots and description.
Have you ever been to Tenant Creek Falls? It's on the Hope falls Rd. I'll attach a shot of that.
                          Thanks!

I appreciate the link, looks like my kind of falls, and my kind of camp. I see they have a email page, so I'm going to contact the camp director this spring.

Were you talking about the Falls in the West Branch also?
I am looking for people who might want to go in there anytime. I spend most of my tome in the Silver Lake Wilderness. I have the WB Gorge listed as a trip looking for companions on Thebackpacker.com for May 1st and 2nd. So far one "maybe" but I just posted it.

I have not been to Tenant Falls. Going into the Hope Falls Area in fact all of the area East of 30 is on my todo list for this season. In fact, I was thinking of going in to the Pine Orchard from Windfall Road in Wells, down through Pumpkin Hollow and then into the Lakes. Let me know if you are interested in that and we can plan it.

I am always looking for trails/bushwhacks and companions. I am free almost any time.
