    Naming Rights: E & S Dix

Some of you saw my post on VFTT--but here is the same:

A friend just faxed me a short article from ADK Life (Feb 2004) about the name changes proposed for E Dix (to be renamed: Grace Peak) and S. Dix (to be renamed: Carson Peak). I believe this proposal orginates with the 46er club. I'd post a link, but the Feb issue is not on the web yet.

Anyway, the article identifes the USBGN as the final authority (don't know what that is? Try the "United States Board of Geographic Names". Who knew?). Apparently, local support is critical...and lacking. The North Hudson Town Supervisor is quoted as: "The Town of North Hudson has no interest in renaming the mountains."

    There you have it.

Well, so far anyway, most folks that have been made aware of the effort have been quite supportive. I've heard very little criticism so far, and that has pretty much evaporated once the background of Russ Carson and Grace Hudowalski was made available.
Many think it's a great idea - Myself among them. A meaningful name is so much better than many of the names bestowed upon the geographic features of the area. Mt.Marcy, for example, was named for a NY Governor who never even traveled to the Adirondacks.

A notable fact is that the names "East Dix" and "South Dix" were never meant to "stick" and were, in fact, named so perfectly boring (by V. Colvin) with the express purpose of changing them when the right time came. (This is documented - I have a copy at home) We believe that time is now.

For those that may be unimpressed with it all, or against it for whatever reason, I suggest they take an hour looking into the lives of these two highly prominient Adirondack figures.

As far as the town supervisor having "no interest" in renaming the mountains? Not his/her call anyway.

Thanks for bringing this up. The more exposure this gets, the greater the chance of accomplishing our goal and shaping history.

Hhhmmm, you've got me there. My 2 or 3 visits to the AMC site left me rather unimpressed with it. Others' comments about it have verified my impression.

Oh wait a minute, I had asked Joel at adirondackjourney.com to post something as well - not sure if he did. (to tell ya the truth, he may still be waiting on me to provide some text to him)

Otherwise, I'm drawing a blank right about now.

By the way - I think someone got the letters wrong on the naming body, but I'm not remembering what they really are. USGS maybe?? Not 100% sure, but I do not recall a "B" in it.

DL, interesting post. I took a look at USBGN's "Principles, Policies, and Procedures: Domestic Geographic Names." Check it out at http://geonames.usgs.gov/pppdgn.html#3-C. One section caught my eye.

Chapter 3, Policy III, section 1 reads:

"The U.S. Board on Geographic Names will consider proposals for assignment of the names or nicknames of deceased persons to geographic features in the United States and areas under the jurisdiction of the United States. The Board will not consider names that commemorate or may be construed to commemorate living persons. In addition, a person must be deceased at least 5 years before a commemorative proposal will be considered."

It appears that despite efforts, Grace Peak won't be officially renamed for some time to come.

            Grace & Carson

I finished my 46 on East Dix (Grace). I would have to redo all my photo's from that day holding my 46r sign on my photoshop; but I would be proud to say I Finished on Grace. You can get more info on this effort at www.adk46r.org This lady was a true inspiration to me when I was doing my first round and still is today. I will always treasure her correspondence letters . She is truely an adk icon. Not everyone has there hiking shorts on display in the adk. museum in Blue Mt. Lake.

Are there any links to biographical information on these two adk figures? (pardon my ignorance, I'm not familiar with either of them)

Forward me some text as well, and I'll add it to my site . I don't get near the traffic that Joel gets (Which is probably good, cuz his is better ), but I average about 780 visits a months so it's a start. Certainly can't hurt.

I support the name change wholeheartedly. I climbed Grace and Carson (can barely remember the old names now) in early July, just after I heard about the effort. I like to tell myself, I climbed Grace and Carson first

I'll do that - stay tuned as I will have our committee chair approve anything I send.

Thanks for the offer. When the official renaming occurs, I'll meet you up there and carry a nice cold brewski for you.

                      text of article

I don't have access to the text of the ADK life article since (A) it is not yet posted on their site (Feb. 2004 issue), and (B) access to current issue is for subscriber's only--which excludes me.

I started this same thread on VFTT. Check the thread there for some add'l responses. Some good thoughts there, I think.

Willie, thanks for the link to the USBGN site. The bureaucracy kills me. I wonder who you have to cross at the CIA to get that assignment!

Well, I'm a fanboy but I never claimed to be the most versed ADK'er in the history of outdoorsmen

The link isn't working, think you need to copy it differently from the source, but I can look it up myself on the timesunion website now that I know WHERE to look.

The sewards will be more fun during a warmer time of year.

                            It will take time ....

.. for the names to become official. If people use the names now however, their official change will be more easily made in the future. Also, there is nothing to stop people or organizations from acting as if it is a done deal; and in fact it would be a good first step. The appearance of maps, with the new names would be a great foundation for the legitimate change. Although I am not a member, ADK maps, with the new names, would be a good start, even if they are technically inaccurate.

                              Perfectly stated Mike!

That's exactly what we are trying to do: Stop using the old names, use nothing but the new.

Local usage goes a long. long way towards effecting name changes. And that's where we're starting. Grace is 97 years old, and with her eventual passing there's a 5 year period before the change can even be considered. In that time, the hope is that people will forget about East & South Dix (what boring names huh?)

Personally, I'm excited about being part of what may help shape history - and all of us can help to make it happen.

Mavs - If you would be willing to provide a link to 46ers.org and just add a coupla sentences to preface the whole idea, the Grace Peak Committee would be very appreciative.

One other note: Hough was once referred to as "Middle Dix" - that name is long gone. The precedence is there.
