    Shower in Placid area?

Does anyone know of a place to catch just a shower in the Lake Placid area? We'll be finishing up the NPT on Columbus Day and driving back to Maine later that day, but would like to get clean first before checking out the local area.

    Thanks!

Not sure about Lake Placid, but FYI, there are coin-operated showers at the Lake Durant CG, which you will walk right by (3 mi. north of Stephens Pond).

I was told the hostel in Keene Valley lets you take a shower for a few bucks. You get a towel & a mini bar of soap.

I don't know if they would make you pay for parking if you wanted to use the coin pay showers at the Loj?

You could call either and find out.

        Thanks

Dick, we plan to not just walk by but spend the night @ Lake Durant, fulling taking advantage of the showers, as well as a motel the next night in Long Lake (already booked). This is at the end of the trip before driving home.

How far away is the Loj from where we're ending up? And which hostel is this? I can't wait til all these names start to make sense to me, having walked and driven by them!

btw, I didn't know what thread to put this under, figured it was more general knowledge than just the NPT.

I'm guessing the Loj is about a 15-20 minute drive or so from Averyville NPT parking lot. If you're going to the Loj, there are showers in the information building, but I'm not sure of their status. Personally, if they're in the same condition as when I last saw the them, I wouldn't touch them with a 10-foot pole! Maybe someone has further information.

I think the post location is fine.

            Dick,
Not sure when the last time was for you, but the showers at the Loj were being renovated last I was there, which was in May. Maybe someone's got more recent info?

The Hostel (that's the name), right on Rt. 73 in Keene Valley (diagonally across from the Noonmark Diner) has very nice showers with towels for a nominal charge ($2? maybe).

Call the Loj and ask 518-523-3441. I'd also ask if you have to pay for parking if your only staying for a few min to shower.

It's the Hoster located in Keene Valley. The drive down the Loj road is not as long as the drive to Keene Valley but they may have nicer showers. Their # is 518-576-2030

Wilmington Notch campground is open until October 9 and has showers that you could probably use for the price of a "day use" fee, usually $3-$5. Its about a 15 minute scenic drive(on route 86) from the NPT trailhead in Lake Placid. Just follow the signs to Whiteface Mountain. The campground is just before the parking lot for the ski center. The showers don't require coins and are kept very clean.

The phone number there is (518)946-7172.

If you go down to ADK Loj and the showers are out in the camper/hiker bldg., just use the showers in the campground.

Lake Placid Health and Fitness on Saranac Avenue may let you use their showers for a fee. There's also a gym above Goldberries on Main Street. It's part of the big hotel there (can't remember the name). They may let you use their facilities.

This is what I've learned so far:
Wilmington Notch CG is closing Oct 8th, one day too soon for us.

The Loj has just referred me to the High Peak Info Center where she says there are showers for hikers. Again, not knowing the lay of the land, I have no idea where this is in relation to the Loj or Averyville TH. I left a v/m, who knows if I'll get a call back or not.

High Peaks Hostel in LP will not let non-guests shower there.

I haven't tried the Keene Valley Hostel yet as that a ways from the TH and not in LP, so a last resort.

I will also check out the fitness centers mentioned.
                          All good suggestions.

                          Thanks again everyone.

As I mentioned above, it is about a 15-20 minute drive between the Averyville TH and the Loj - not a walk, unfortunately.

The Olympic Training Center nearer (a mile or so?) to the TH, on Averyville Road. I wonder if anyone knows if they have showers and would allow you to use them? Just a thought. RC, do you know?
